Advisors: Dr. Hergen Eilers and Prof. Choong-Shik Yoo
Investigated metal-particle loaded thin film composites as optoelectronic
materials. Demonstrated unique tunable light absorption profiles including a
best solar-matching spectrum and a broadband visible-to-IR absorption
spectrum.
Developed various individual and multi-layer metal thin films via PVD.
Investigated their microstructure-property relationships (optical, electrical,
electronic, and chemical properties).
Established proper wet-chemistry routes to synthesize and disperse Eu: Lu2O3
ceramic particles and characterized their luminescent properties.

Technical Expertise
Materials Characterization
Extensive experience with SEM/EDS, XRD, AFM/STM, Auger/XPS/UPS, Raman/FTIR,
microbalances, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, source-meter unit, oscilloscope, time-resolved
techniques (synchrotron X-ray, pyrometry, piezo-electric/resistive pressure sensors, and
high-speed microphotography).
Additional experience in many other analytical techniques including TEM, SIMS,
DSC/DTA/TGA thermal analysis, surface profilometry, and mechanical testing etc.
Thin Film Engineering
Proficient in thin film deposition using CVD (Laser and electron-beam CVD), PVD
(magnetron sputtering, thermal evaporation, electron-beam evaporation), and self-assembly.
Semiconductor Technology
Broad experience with clean room. Specialized in surface processing of Si wafers and
metals/ceramics (cleaning, wet etching, and functionalization). Skilled in microfabrication
(electron-beam writing and photolithography).
Laser Spectroscopy and Laser Materials Processing
Extensive experience with various Lasers, relevant optics, Laser spectroscopy, and Laser
materials processing (Laser CVD, CVI, sintering and surface remelting).
Experimental Equipment Development
Strong ability to design and develop scientific instruments. Built two Raman spectroscopes,
one 6-Channel optical pyrometer, and several vacuum, cryogenic and environmental systems
for vapor phase deposition and combustion. Expert in instrument control and measurement
electronics.
