MASS COMMUNICATION/ BROADCAST JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE
Newscast Producer-
WTMJ4, Milwaukee, Wisconsin:
I have spent a majority of the past 6 years as a newscast producer at Milwaukee's NBC
affiliate, WTMJ4. I embraced my initial role as a weekend/utility producer, also using every
opportunity to develop, challenge myself and earn promotions for the duration of my time there.
Within one year, I earned the responsibilities of helping to launch an hourlong afternoon
newscast. It was then that I was really able to showcase my creativity - enterprising, cultivating
and implementing various segments from scratch. That allowed me to put 'my' stamp on the
broadcast products, ultimately brainstorming and building a hybrid of unique content with news,
weather and sports.
Part of the above mentioned scope of work included the cultivation of comedic but
informative skits to tie in with sports, weather and/or entertainment news. I wrote these,
enhanced them graphically and even acted as the on air talent. This deviation from the
traditional, predictable and typical newscasts allowed the station to present a fresh look to
viewers at relatively no added cost during challenging economic times.
As that juncture in time concluded, I was promoted to produce the 6PM newscast, which
struggled as the ''news caboose'' of what had become a local news hole of nearly 4 straight hours
of programming. In 2+ years at that position, I helped lead our team effort to incorporate changes
that would gradually yet steadily bring the show back to a competitive level.
Between 2009 and 2013, I was also the main fill in producer for the 10PM news, utilizing
my abilities to envision, construct and execute the show of record from the ground up and on
short notice if needed. This also allowed me to fine tune the way in which I am able to lead
versatile and vocal groups of employees.
I developed effective methods of communicating daily objectives in a firm and fair way.
I've found that the key to perpetuating positive interpersonal communication in a high stress
work environment such as this is requires showing respect in times of agreement or
disagreement. That seems to foster reciprocal respect, and success in the grand scheme.
4/2006 - 8/2007
Newscast Producer-
KOAT, Action 7 News, Albuquerque, New Mexico:
While in New Mexico, I held job titles including newscast producer and field producer.
Duties included envisioning, laying-out, assembling, and executing daily news coverage
plans. When needed, I would also conduct interviews and compose individual news stories for
broadcast.
8/2004 - 4/2006
Newscast Producer / Executive Producer-
NBC 26 / WGBA, Green Bay, Wisconsin:
While originally hired as a morning show producer, a station ownership change and
subsequent personnel and format changes provided me the opportunity and experience necessary
to take on a dual role as a line producer of daily 6:00 P.M. newscasts, and Executive Producer of
all dayside newscasts.
For just over a year as an E.P., I was responsible for researching, organizing and laying
out a daily assignment planner. This started with enterprising potential story ideas in the morning
editorial meetings, and overseeing each assignment until it was ready to air in a given newscast.
As a developing manager, I quickly and successfully learned to assume active leadership roles
while multitasking and troubleshooting on the fly. Other tasks included guiding, navigating and
assisting field crews to help ensure that the most is gotten of every story assignment in an
efficient and timely manner.
