For three weeks I interned in the department of cardiothoracic surgery at the
Hospital of Gaia, accompanying and assisting the perfusionist. This experience
gave me the possibility of putting into practise the knowledge obtained
throughout my degree in the discipline of cardiovascular perfusion.
My responsibilities included:
Managing the physiological and metabolic needs of the cardiac surgical
patients using the heart-lung machine, as well as its associated
components of an oxygenator, filters, reservoirs and tubing.
Conducting and reporting electrocardiogram results for interpretation and
diagnosis in the Internamento - After the surgery.
