USDA-ARS-ANRI, Food Safety Lab., Beltsville, MD
8/2001 - 9/2008
IT Specialist (Applications Software)
Managed the development of an enterprise-wide automated on-line poultry
inspection system via visible near infrared technology and was responsible
for network, system and software security. Managed the laboratory routers
and switches, and analyzed the network packets. The objective of this
project is to develop a real-time, effective system for detecting diseases
and contamination on poultry carcasses on-line. Developing this system
would increase the U.S. broiler industry sales by $1.5 to $2.5 billion over
5 years.
. In this position, I worked directly with Subject Matter Experts from
varied onsite companies, some of whom supported different contracts
from the IDS Team, Certification and Accreditation and System
administration department. My principle duties of managing the
laboratory routers and switches and

analyzing anomalous network packets required me to translate their inputs
and data into reports for both our senior and non-technical management.
Working under minimal supervision, I created finished products that ranged
from operational reports, to System Initialization, Data Collection, Data
Modeling and Mining, and Model Prediction reports.
These products were utilized by high-level personnel in the USDA Laboratory
areas of operations to make decisions that affected the networking and
security posture of our networks and IT infrastructure. I utilized the best
practices as defined in the NIST SP Publications 800-37 and 800-53.
. Involved with the laboratory management team to initiate this project
by developing the project charter, documenting the project benefits,
and assigning the needed resources.
. Communicated effectively with laboratory scientists and Stork Gamco,
Inc, Gainesville, GA engineers to gather the functional and security
requirements, and develop the project plan.
. Designed the architecture prototype of the machine vision inspection
software, which consists of the following modules: System
Initialization, Data Collection, Data Modeling and Mining, and Model
Prediction.
. Implemented and coded the specified software using LabVIEW, C/C++ and
Visual Studio. Developed pattern recognition system using neural
network. Developed data mining tools: principal component analysis and
wavelets.
. Developed database system using MS access by deploying an SQL coding
and reporting.
. Deployed code security countermeasures for buffer overflow, SQL
injection, race conditions, parameter validations, and performed
manual and automatic code review by using build-in debuggers and
Fortify. Also used Nessus for discovering any software
vulnerabilities.
. Used Symantec Data Loss Prevention (DLP) to protect the archived data
stored in the databases.
. Tested the developed system in a various Kill-line chicken plants:
ConAgra foods, Athens, GA and Tyson foods, New Holland, PA.
. Earned an approval from the executive management to certify and
accredit this system.
. Successfully published in scientific journals for a new poultry
machine vision inspection system.
. Worked with laboratory scientists, as a part of a cooperative research
and development agreement, with Stork Gamco, Inc., Gainesville, GA, to
commercialize the developed system.
. Presented this developed system that is ready to transfer to industry
to the Technology Strategy and Business Development, Maryland
Department of Business and Economic Development.
. Maintained the records of the laboratory IP addresses, monitored the
network traffics by using an intrusion detection system (IDS),
installed up-to-date Anti Virus software and updated signatures, and
backed up all of the generated system data files in daily basis.
Physics Department, Davis, CA 9/1996 - 12/2000
Teaching and Research Assistant
. Reader and teaching assistant for lower and upper division physics
courses.
. Worked as a team member for research and development a relativistic
heavy ion physics experiments (E895 and STAR). This includes
development and upgrading the applications software prototype for a
charged elementary particles spectra and flow analysis. Used FORTRAN,
C/C++, and UNIX systems.
