Relevant Work
Music
I am a working musician with many years experience of performing both solo and in
ensemble, in the UK and abroad (particularly, France and Greece). I specialise in guitar and
vocals. My repertoire ranges from Steely Dan to Stevie Wonder and Frank Zappa. I manage
and oversee three live music clubs (Buskers’ nights) in the region. All players from students
to hobbyists are made aware of this and are actively encouraged by me and other staff to
come along and take part in these to gain experience in performing live. This gives them a
true insight into the real world of a working musician.
Experience
My teaching experience and posts have included eight years at Gateshead College.
Whilst at Gateshead College in 2006 I devised and introduced a “Band Planning” class for
the level three music programme. This involved students being placed into bands overseen
by myself and two other members of staff. Students chose a set of six to seven songs to be
performed ten to twelve weeks later. This comprised rehearsing their set in a live ensemble
situation weekly then a performance of their set of songs at a pre arranged live venue. These
performances were recorded to DVD and I would then analyse and mark all individuals
performances covering all aspects of the rehearsal process such as: communication skills,
collaboration skills, effective time management, instrumental skills, ability, and musical
development. I would liaise with my course manager and agree each individual’s final mark
to ensure the student’s grade was a true reflection of their performance and development.
In 2005 I also taught guitar night classes at Kenton Bar School/College and Gateshead
College for two years. These classes were over a ten week period consisting of a two hour
session. I assembled all lesson plans and a ten week Scheme of Work for both of these. I
facilitated all necessary handouts, tasks and worksheets for all the learners. I also deliver on-
going private guitar tuition.
Other experience
1998-99. Part Time Caretaker Gateshead Council covering for holidays & sickness
1979-98. Universal Bedding &Upholstery Ltd. Storeman, 1 year.
Promotion to Machine Operative manufacturing mattresses on a timework basis.
1977-79. Derwent Television Newcastle. Trainee Television Engineer
Personal Statement
I was employed as an Associate Lecturer in Music by Gateshead College in 2004, before this
in 2003 I would volunteer to cover some classes when needed covering for absent tutors,
live performances or just busy periods. My duties included teaching varied classes, a vocal
session with between two to six students covering scales and intervals. A guitar session
including one to one and small groups of between two and four students, again looking into
guitar scales, chords and soloing, composition, ensemble classes and rehearsal skills. After
some months I was offered two hours paid teaching, then four, then eight. In 2008 my hours
were increased to 15.
In September 2008 I was asked to facilitate and deliver the NCFE Certificate Level 2 for the
Music Department as part of additionality for the level three National Diploma programme. It
coverered composition tasks, recording techniques, basic sight reading (rhythmic passages)
performing rhythmic riffs & motifs and time management skills. As the facilitator for the NCFE
I was responsible for Health & Safety, collecting all completed tasks, collation of al individual
student marking, composing all afore mentioned tasks, allocating specialised rooms, i.e.
recording studio, classrooms and computer suits.
I enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience to those who listen and want to improve
with their Musicality. I’m not afraid of challenges and like to try new methods, practically and
in the classroom. I am willing to spend time out of class and term time with students who
have difficulties with certain aspects in the learning environment. I actively encouraged and
assisted in other activities, trips and other ventures involved with colleagues and students.
These included twice a year Lake District trips and yearly trips to France in May since 2006
for the “Yes or Notes Festival”. During this three day festival in St Etienne Du Rouvray I
correspond with staff at L’Ecole de Music (St Etienne) and organise some impromptu
musical ensembles with our French colleagues. This involves writing out musical parts for
guitar, bass, vocals and piano. Networking using Facebook I arrange a routine and put in
place any ideas from our French team then implement these for the final live performance at
the Festival.
