I am a very experienced General and Thoracic Surgeon, with more of 30 years of clinical
practice; I am currently Professor of Surgery at the Bologna Medical School in Italy and
Consultant in Surgery at a big Hospital in Bologna. I have a big experience in breast surgery
but I can cover a wide spectrum of the surgical field from general abdominal, laparoscopic,

SUMMARY
Professor Giovanni Ussia is a Medical Doctor of Italian nationality, Specialist in General and Thoracic Surgery,
currently professor of Surgery at the Medical School of the University of Bologna, Italy and consultant in General
Surgery at the University of Bologna and at some private hospitals in Italy. with more than thirty years of clinical
activity in different field of Surgery ( General, Thoracic, laparoscopic, Plastic, Emergency Surgery) . he has
dedicated the last 20 years to breast surgery in all his aspects. He obtained his professional qualification and
specialist diploma in the best Italian Universities with maximum score and honours. His working experience
started in the Bologna Medical School doing surgical research where work with some periods spent in USA
( Massachusetts General Hospital Boston USA and Addenbrookes Hospital directed by Sir Roy Calne. Prof Ussia
was one of the pioneers in liver transplant and laparoscopic surgery in Italy. He has developed an extraordinary and
unique research and teaching experience ( more than 150 publications) In more than 30 years of clinical activity
prof Ussia has been involved as first and second operator in almost 6,000 surgeries (high number of major
surgery) in many surgical fields, from general surgery to thoracic surgery, liver transplant, laparoscopy, as well
plastic and emergency surgery. He worked with the world masters of surgery, starting with Prof Possati director od
Surgical Dept. Bologna Medical School, and working very close with to Prof George Nardi Chief of GI Surgery at
Harvard Medical School in Boston with Dr Hermes Grillo, chief of Thoracic Surgery at MGH in Boston, and with
Sir Roy Calne Pioneer of Liver Transplant in Cambridge UK,
Prof Ussia has also big experience of Hospital and Surgical Dept. Management, as well he has also considerable
experience of teaching and supervising the surgical team in all aspects.
He is also currently a consultant for the construction of the University Hospital in Bucharest. He is registered in the
GMC UK with full licence to practice as Specialist in General and Thoracic Surgery, as well at the Italian Medical
Council.
He is member of the most important Surgical Scientific Societies as the American College of Surgeons. Due to his
large clinical experience, prof Ussia can be considered a Surgeon who can safely perform difficult operation also
in situations of emergency with excellent clinical judgement; he is very capable of teaching, supervising and
motivate a surgical team. He performed some extraordinary operations which where also reported with emphasis in
local newspapers.
In conclusion, prof Ussia is a very talented multidisciplinary surgeon with considerable clinical, scientific and
teaching experience both from the point of view of the clinician responsible standpoint surgical technician who
may very well with being extremely useful in a surgical ward where it is necessary extensive experience in many
surgical fields. He can certainly give a great contribution for the improvement of the care of the patients in the

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: Scientific Activity
Scientific research has been consistent through the present addressing various areas of investigation, including
surgery of the liver, liver transplant surgery, acute hepatic insufficiency, hepatic regeneration, the study of
preservation of the liver awaiting liver transplant surgery, the science of liver hypothermia, the physiopathology of
biliary acids, portal hypertension, tissue reactivity to synthetic materials such as suture materials, the use of
human fibrin, the study of the tissue reactivity to vascular prosthesis, the effects of the laser beam, and problems
of insulinoma . Studies and set up of new techniques in the field of minimal invasive surgery in biliary liver and
intestine and pelvic surgery. Vascular surgery and prevention of arterial thrombosis has been an area of
considerable personal interest culminating in research that has been published in the Journal of Vascular
Surgery; recent involvement in clinical research in preventive and protective medicine using high tech equipment
and combining the clinical, laboratory, genetic and imaging data to make custom made preventive programs for
healthy individuals.
