Audio Systems Engineering
Peter is a musician and professional engineer with over twenty five years experience in acoustics and audio system design. He is an expert in the fields of architectural acoustics, digital audio processing and transducer design used for live sound reinforcement and recording systems. He works with architects, theatre consultants and sound production companies designing auditoria and audio production systems for musical and theatrical performances. His highly integrated approach includes the design of both the architectural acoustics of the space and the electronic sound reinforcement systems required to produce complete live performance soundscapes.
Peter is also a very experienced speaker design engineer. In the 1990s, he founded Esper Signals Inc. in Ottawa, and manufactured a line of consumer speaker products. He also worked as a consumer product marketing consultant for Audiosphere Research, JBL, Packard Bell and Frog Design on prototype wireless speakers. He was co-founder and President of the Association of Canadian Audio Manufacturers from 1993-1997. Most recently he worked on a very rugged, high efficiency paging loudspeaker for use on marine vessels, including a unique horn loudspeaker design and class “D” amplifier module.

Developed a system of infrared sensors to automatically switch a telephone handset from “normal” to “hands free” mode depending on its proximity to the user’s ear. Nortel subsequently patented the system.
Designed, manufactured and launched a complete line of consumer loudspeakers under the Esper brand name. Speakers received good reviews in magazines and at trade shows in Montreal and Las Vegas. The speakers were sold in Canada, USA, France and Taiwan.
Involved in concept to production of wireless consumer products. Projects included traveling to the US and Germany for development and market positioning of new products.
Developed a “pre-Bluetooth” wireless consumer product, for an OEM supplier to Packard Bell. Prototype product included a 1.5Mbps digital audio link working in the 915Mhz band
Developed a digital audio power amplifier switching 40V at over 1 MHz using Pulse Width Modulation. Worked on an all digital version using Sigma-Delta modulation to produce an efficient Pulse Density Modulation stream which could then be low pass filtered to drive a speaker.
