Professional Experience
FLIGHT CONTROL ENGINEER
2004-Present
Israel Aerospace Industries
Brought on board with this leading aerospace and aviation manufacturer to
assume a lead role in the flight control department including "from-
scratch" and upgrade projects spanning aircraft control testing;
development of flight test requirements, plans, and reviews; definition of
instrumentation and software requirements; flight test data reduction and
preparation of test reports. Additionally handles complex development and
design efforts in support of major projects for civilian and military
application.
. Coordinated project development and design, in collaboration with
internal departments including electronics, communications, and
avionics, from conceptual design phase till laboratory, ground, and
actual flight testing.
. Interfaced with management to establish project's milestones, in
addition to conducting regular project progress meetings to discuss
ongoing successes and problems.
. Conducted development of flight control software packages for flight
control systems from definition of design goals to implementation and
quality evaluation.
. Authored software for flight control testing with a focus on reducing
product development costs and enhancing software and overall flight
control system efficiency in comparison with existing products.
. Researched and capitalized on opportunities to improve product cost
while maintaining effectiveness, optimizing in-flight computer software
for flight control and navigation.
. Played a key role in automatic takeoff and landing projects, leveraging
a thorough understanding of flight dynamics to implement necessary
software, conduct flight testing, and develop improvements as project
lead.
. Participated in definition of Software Quality Assurance policy for
flight control software.
. Participate in the flight control software development lifecycle,
including requirements gathering, design review, code review and testing
processes.
. Performed step by step validation of flight control software packages
from simulator and unit tests till "iron-bird" laboratory and flight
tests. The validation processes included traceability, coverage and
performance tests according to the SQA policy.
. Performed regression and sanity tests as part of "black-box" testing of
flight control software for aircraft software version updates.
. Contributed to justification of FC systems based on STANAG-4586 for
European customers and compliance of the software to the DO-178B.
. Supported customers in project-specific demands and requirements
definition including writing engineering coordination memos.
. Performed various simulator tests to evaluate the stability of the
aircraft through simulation of real environment and dynamics of flight
while using real-time flight computer.
. Conducted several flight incident investigations, reconstructing chain
of events based on flight data analysis and flight crew debriefing.
Implemented the investigation conclusions in flight control system
updates.
. Cultivated advanced experience with FC software integration and testing
within sensor/actuator/engine upgrade projects, participated in
multinational UAV upgrade initiatives, and led development of state-of-
the-art navigation control laws for flight testing.
. Participated actively in development of new flight control systems
architecture, coordinating work with system engineering personnel in
integrated test bench, field and on-site tests/demonstrations.
. Developed proficiency with in-house Six/Three DoF simulation programs
based on FORTRAN, C/C++, Matlab, and Simulink, as well as the digital
implementation of designed flight control laws.
. Defined, implemented and tested failure detection and isolation (FDI)
algorithms for sensors (Inertial, Air data & navigation) and control
surface / engine logics and laws.
. Supervised the work of junior engineers.
UAV PERFORMANCE & PROJECT ENGINEER
1998-2004
Israeli Air Force
Served as a UAV Performance and Project Engineer within the Israeli Air
Force, working within a flight science team tasked with evaluation of
aircraft performance and dynamics, flight control, conducting project
planning, military research and development, and flight testing, developing
modifications, and investigating incidents with a specialized focus in
UAVs.
. Managed various engineering processes involving aircraft performance and
flight control and developed recommendations for cost and performance
modifications.
. Administered the definition of flight control system requirements based
on MIL-F-8785C standard, and contributed to performance flight tests as
well as subsequent analyses and preparation of test result summaries.
. Conducted wind tunnel testing in order to validate and predict the
behaviour of several aircrafts.
. Performed preliminary evaluation of aerodynamic coefficients and
dynamics of an aircraft based on literature (Etkin, Horner, Raymer and
etc.)
. Monitored, controlled, and reported aircraft project progress and
planned program revisions and improvements as necessary, while
investigating UAV aerodynamic characteristics using panel and Euler CFD
methodologies.
. Designed and implemented new flight patterns to mitigate flying
constrictions related to nearby population centres, putting in place
functionalities for safe landing or self-destruction without harm to
civilian populations.
. Conducted flight tests for fuel reduction based on airframe improvements
. Designed and conducted environmental tests for avionic equipment based
on MIL-STD-810E.
