EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Duties and Responsibilities

* Prepare the unit for receiving the patients.

* Always ready to receive emergency such as cardiac arrest, Shock,

hypoglycemia, hypotension, polytrauma cases, head injuries, snakebites

* Follow Triage Protocol

* Assessment based on ABCD method

* Initiate resuscitation procedure as needed

* Inform Emergency medical Officer on Patient's arrival.

* Application of ECG electrodes, arterial lines, urinary catheters and

nasogastric tubes.

* Splinting of suspected fractures

* Cleaning and dressing of wounds

* Perform IV cannula insertion, IV therapy, blood transfusion, bladder

irrigation, Endo Tracheal (ET), nasal or oral suction and gastric

lavage as needed

* Formulation of nursing diagnosis and plan of care

* Observe and monitor closely the patient

* Communicate with other members of health care team as necessary

* Assist the doctors performing the diagnostic and therapeutic

procedures

* Collection of specimens for routine and culture studies

* Arterial blood sample collection for ABG analysis

* Prepare the patient for procedures like X-ray, ECG,CT scan, MRI,

Echocardiogram, Echocardiogram, EEG, Dialysis, KUB & IVP

* Prepare the patient for emergency surgery and shift to Operation

Theatre after taking informed consent

* Maintain patient record

* Establish good rapport with the patient and family

* Proper hand washing before and after every procedure

* Maintain aseptic techniques to control and prevent infection

* Check the inventory at each duty shift and record it in the register

* Maintain emergency trolley at each duty shift

* Transfer of patient to other unit as per doctor's order

* Care of Ventilated patients
