MAJOR PROJECT
Title DIMETHYL TEREPHTHALATE
Objective As a design material, polyethylene terephthalate was first commercialized in 1966 through the introduction of Arnite by Akzo. An injection-moldable PET was now commercial which, because of nucleating agents, had a crystallization rate that made economic injection molding possible. Afterward a number of firms brought injection-moldable PET to the market: Hostadur from Hoechst, Crusting from Ciba Geigy, and FR-PET from Teijin. The increase in the PET demand in the major market fibers, film and rigid packaging has been the primary drivers for the DMT/PTA market. This project work is carried out based on 150 MT/day of DMT. Major work included is viz. detailed process description, process flow sheet, material balance, energy balance (based on capacity chosen), design of major equipment, cost study and plant location, layout. Utmost care is taken to keep he work genuine and realistic.
Conclusion
This project work is an attempt in understanding the fundamentals of Chemical Engineering principles and its application in industrial practice. DMT finds many applications wider and deeper. The material and energy balances have been calculated in quite realistic manner. The assumptions mad also are not wild and based on fundamental Principles. The cost estimation is worked out and year-wise projected cost is calculated. For plant layout the widely practiced and accepted principles are applied. The return on investment is prosperous and project stands with good scope with the added statistics claims that the demand for DMT gradually increases at a rate of 8 to 10%. WORKSHOP
