October 05/ Engineering Consultant (self) - Professional Engineer Present

Development and production of new cobalt chemicals for Umicore (former employer) as Project Manager / Production Manager / Consultant in 2007-2009. All the managers had left and my mission was to modify the old plant with reactors, filter-presses, centrifuges, spray dryer and make a good product while maintaining the spirit. Exhilarating. After successful completion, the plant was relocated to China and I was asked to organize the demolition and cleaning of the whole site..

Designed and built a pilot plant, dismantling and recycling electric car batteries.

Design and construction of two new plants to recycle automotive catalytic converters in Maxton, NC (and commissionning them fully as interim plant manager – 2009-2015). Still running good today. Consultant for other similar operations.

Main water lines, layout drawings and hydraulics for public water works (Dillon County and Darlington County) as a PE. Design and inspection (about 100 miles). Wrapped up the hydraulic modelization of the whole Dillon County water network.. Permit applications for new water wells.

Actually collaborating to the design of a new pharmaceutical plant in China

(reactors, distillation, SX ...)

Managed several projects and plant modifications for the cobalt plant.

Built an experimental tungsten carbide plant (dissolution, spray drying, carburization).

Improved the indium plant in the Rhode Island division, revamping production lines and training new engineers. Designed a new recycling plant for indium residues.

Designed a new catalyst recovery plant for the Alabama division.

Manager of the new Germanium tetrachloride plant in Maxton, after building it

(reactors, purification, distillation, etc.)

Simultaneously in the cobalt plant: electro-mechanical maintenance, general troubleshooting, quality control overview, operation improvements (and general introduction of PLCs), effluent treatment, steam, HVAC and other utilities, streamlining and cost cutting, LEAN manufacturing, developing procedures, OSHA compliance... Always within budget. Great time.

Designed and managed different projects ranging from metallurgy/chemistry to sludge and effluent treatment (Examples: windmill aerators in public ponds – improving precious metal recovery in a jewellery recycling workshop – defining process in silver powder production – started a nickel nanopowder plant).

long haul project: modelization of the Noranda Lead Refinery in New Brunswick 1993/1994 R&D Engineer with Falconbridge (Timmins, northern Ontario)

Worked on various projects such as stabilizing the zinc plant residues to backfill the mine or smoothing down the leaching/electrolysis process to a steady level. 1987/1993 Plant Manager with Zinchem (South Africa – Anglo-American subsidiary), Elected to the Board of Directors in 91. Managed 240 staff members.

Production of mainly zinc powder and zinc oxide by distillation.

Designed and developed a new plant producing zinc and copper salts, and a zinc distillation using induction furnaces (a first in the world.) All still running good today.

Designed a lance furnace operation for tin smelting in northern Transvaal.

Responsibilities included budget & costs, reporting, new projects, engineering, production, overview of electro-mechanical maintenance, lab & quality control. 1983/1987 Principal Engineer - Gecamines (Congo) 980 people reporting.

Managing five different services: Panda copper smelter, Shituru cobalt arc furnaces, copper refining and casting (reverberatory and rotary furnaces), lead factory (alloying, casting, sheet rolling, pipe extrusion for internal use) and railroad tracks maintenance (also build miles of new railroad tracks). 1974/1983 Engineer/General Manager with Prayon/SCT (Belgium)

Production and R&D successively for the zinc reduction furnaces, blende roasters

& sulfuric acid plant, and the zinc electrolytic plant. Developed a process to separate zinc metal from galvanization ashes, designed & built a plant producing zinc powder from atomized molten zinc, and a zinc sheet recycling plant (old roofing).

Later, became Cadmium Plant Manager, Zinc Mill Plant Manager, and finally General Manager after the company split. Then left Belgium, its taxes and rain behind.

Applications Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, MS Project among others. Industrial PLC programming (in process control and SCADA) Personnaly involved in electronics, microprocessor programming, etc. Manage by consensus, striving for good working relations, team builder, excellent contacts with clients, skills management..
