Responsibilities
Ensure confine space safety procedures has been covered (gas test, safe entry and exit, closing of all pipe ends, emergency preparedness, watcher, adequate ventilation etc.) before issuing permit to enter for workers for works in chambers, trenches, etc.
As a member of the safety team, I am to also ensure all necessary paperwork and safety systems are in place for the protection of workers, and all workers involved in live sewer works are fully trained. Provide suitable personal protective equipment, which may include waterproof/ abrasion-resistant gloves, footwear, eye and respiratory protection. Face visors are particularly effective against splashes.
Monitor and ensure utmost safety practices and for sewerage works like installation of drain pipes, ventilation pipes, sludge dewatering etc.
Ensuring a safe system of work such as PTW, safe work platforms, LOTO, adequate shoring and protection of trenches from collapse, safe and sufficient means of access and egress from excavations/trenches, etc. are in place.
Overseeing the activities of other safety personnel across various site locations, liasoning with regulatory agencies like the traffic/civil defense departments, the Nigeria Metrological and weather forecast department, the Nigeria Police, Emergency response team, the ministry of transportation etc. Development of required document such the Temporary Traffic Management Plan, HSE Plan, Emergency Preparedness and Rescue Plan etc.
Monitor the safety of engineers and traffic diversion during trunking of telecommunications cables along high traffic routes.
Ensure proper documentation of monitoring/measurements of activities such as noise, vibration, air quality and fume emission etc. Also for the disposal of all types of wastes generated during construction and maintenance services.
Working knowledge of Relative Risk Model for drafting of Risk Assessment especially for high risk jobs (such as confine space, work at height, lifting, hot works etc.).
Oversee the overall traffic management in terms of appropriate traffic diversion and channelization using different standards of geometric designs.
Coordinate with the project team to ensure necessary permits from regulatory agencies involving underground utilities are collected and proper safety measures in place before the commencement of any activities.

Required tests are carried out at regular intervals in excavations, trenches and tunnels to mitigate the possibility of buildup of hazardous gases and air.
