PRESENTATIONS AND AWARDS
GUEST LECTURER • MARCH 2019
I was invited by Dr. Adams to guest lecture for her cognitive behavioral neuroscience course. The topic was Social Cognition, I spoke about the research I was conducting and its relation to the topic. Social Cognition involves the study of attitudes, prejudice, self-concept, decision-making and most importantly communication. Patients whose ability to communicate has diminished impacts all areas of life. The lecture focused on the regions in the brain involved, and how by improving areas of social cognition you aid in the overall health and wellbeing of patients.
RESEARCH PROPOSAL • JANUARY 2019
The work I am most proud of, was also my most difficult. As a clinical research assistant, I developed a research protocol, and hypothesis for the use of Lego Therapy adapted for patients with Multiple Sclerosis. After presenting this information in-front of a board I aided in data collection and grant writing for the research. The research later was broadcasted on multiple local news outlets being the first of its kind. My position was only a temporary one, but the work created continues now as a yearlong program
NORTON NEUROSCIENCE SYMPOSIUM • 2018
Shortly after beginning work at the Norton Neuroscience resource center I was approached by Shannon Carron and asked to analyze the data she collected on mediation. After learning about my past experience with meditation, Ms. Shannon invited me to speak alongside her at the Neuroscience Symposium. I gladly took the offer even though I had never spoken in front of a crowd that large. Our speech was curated around the neurological and psychological changes that occur with mediation. At the end of our speech I lead to auditorium in a group guided mediation.
PANEL MEMBER • MARCH 2018
The Dean of Student success, contacted me and asked if I would like to speak on a panel discussing our current jobs and the paths that we took to get there. I discussed my job as a mental health technician. Afterwards talking about my past, and struggles that I overcame in college. Explaining to others the importance of perseverance, social support networks, and the utilization of resources available to them as students to succeed. What I loved about this experience was the helping others by answering questions and giving them inspiration to continue on their road of education and self-exploration increase sales.
PANEL MEMBER NEUROETHICS • 2017
As a panel we disused the future of neuroethics. Neuroethics being an ethical philosophy that shapes ethics by creating a system around what humans are rather than what they ought to be. The main points being as pharmacological systems, and technology advance what happens to those who cannot afford or receive the treatments? Systems and safe guards must be put in place as to not further create a divide between those who have and those who have not. Discussions such as these are important because they create a larger community awareness of ethical dilemmas occurring today
POSTER PRESENTATION GROWTH MINDSET • APRIL 2017
I was involved in conducting, organizing and analyzing research on Growth Mindset Manipulation. The research focused on manipulating students’ mindsets from that of fixed, “I can’t pass math because I’m not good at it” to a growth mindset “I can pass math if I practice.” The experimental group passed their math class with a 25% greater likelihood than the control. This experience allowed for me to see firsthand the importance of one’s mindset and the long-term effects it has on their education. The research continues to be conducted in a longitudinal fashion
POSTER PRESENTATION GINSENG VS COFFEE • APRIL 2017
I presented research my partner and I conducted analyzing the differences in cognitive enhancing abilities of Ginseng and Coffee. We hypothesized that those in the ginseng group would have greater cognitive enhancing effects, while those in the coffee group would have a greater perception of enhanced ability. This did not yield statistically significant data but taught me more about the full process of research preparation, and conduction.
