Tarbela Dam Project was constructed commencing in 1968 and finally completed in 1984. The 143.2m high, 2744m long earth and rockfill main dam with inclined clay core across the Indus River has two spillways through the left bank (incorporated in the auxiliary embankment dams) discharging into a side valley. The 105.2m high, 713m long Auxiliary Dam No 1 and the 67.1m high, 293m long Auxiliary Dam No 2, close-off low gaps in the left bank of the valley. The service spillway is equipped with seven 15.24m wide x 18.6m high radial gates while the auxiliary spillway has nine 15.24m wide x 18.6m high radial gates. A group of 4 tunnels, through the right abutment varying in diameter from 13.72m upstream of the gate’s shafts to 13.25m and 10.97m downstream of the gate’s shafts and length from 731m to 823m were constructed for irrigation releases and power generation. Tunnel No 5, of length 1120m and similar diameter, used mainly for irrigation is located on the left bank was constructed and put into operation in April 1976.

The power station on the right bank near the toe of the main dam houses 14 power units, making the present generating capacity of Tarbela Power Station 3,478 MW.

The World Bank funded Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project proposes to add more generation capacity utilizing the existing infrastructure including use of Tunnel No 4 as the power waterway. 1410 MW capacity will be added by installation of 3 units of 470 MW each

As Junior Engineer and site responsible, I have to monitor all the Construction, installation erection, including Electromecnical Works to evaluated project progress, and including reporting to WAPDA. Due to very less site experience for the said reasonability, I had to do allot of struggle like doing research, studying different project as a case study, seeing manuals of equipment’s and communicating/guidance of the seniors make me able to handle the load of such a magnitude of work.

To take Part in the Chairman WAPDA, Member Water, Project Adviser Level visits to site and Meetings to groom myself as a Strong technical knowledgeable person and as a Manager as well. I am pretty Confident now as With the start of the Professional Carrier at this level Big, Unique and prestigious project where I had an opportunity to work with the world class international engineers and Managers.
