INTERESTS:

Details of my activities and contributions as a teacher including innovative methods, science popularization activities etc.

1. OUT OF THE BOX THINKING: As a teacher, I always try to do something new and innovative. I believe that the human brain works better in constraints. I don’t like to give problems to solve just in copy-book style only, but make the students think of various solutions. Eg., in the SCIENCE FEST of my former school of Jamshedpur, I introduced a competition where participants had to solve a problem within a definite time limit. The groups were asked to construct a model using newspaper and cello tape (equal amount to all the teams) which could carry maximum load with minimum base area. Sometimes, I had changed the task by giving a definite amount of clay with which every team had to construct a model which could float and at the same time carry maximum weight. Students found this very interesting. The judges (scientists from CSIR-NML, Govt. of India) also very much appreciated the idea and thoughts. 2. SETTING UP OF A SCIENCE PARK INSIDE THE SCHOOL PREMISES: It was really a revolutionary idea to create a SCIENCE PARK in the school with working models displayed. This encourages scientific temperament among students of all levels specially Junior students. For eg, seven different colours are fitted with a cycle rim which may be rotated by pedal system and a clear white streak is formed at the rotating rim. Other models displayed are Periscope, conservation of linear momentum, sundial, Kaleidoscope...and many more. Junior students also take interest in this because they study about these concepts in their book and get hands on experience from science park. I, along with my team of science teachers, supervises this park which is well maintained by the students of std XI. 3. INVITING SCIENTISTS AND SPECIALIZED PERSONALITIES FROM OUTSIDE : I invited quite a number of renowned personalities in the field of science, eminent scientists from CSIR-NML and AMD for interaction with the students. The students also feel inspired talking to these eminent personalities. Recently (in the month of first week of November’2016), two eminent scientists from AMD came to our school and shared information on peaceful uses of Nuclear Energy.

4. VISIT TO NATIONAL LEVEL SCIENCE LABORATARIES: I take interest to arrange visit for students to NML, Atomic Mineral Department (AMD) etc. Through these visits the students have understood the peaceful use of Nuclear Energy.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:

1. Have interest in games and sports.

2. Have interest in quiz and other types of brain storming activities. 3. Taking part and also organised in various social activities like Blood Donation, Tree-Plantation, Social Service, Road Safety Awareness Programme etc. 4. Teacher Moderator of ‘Science Club’ of Jamshedpur Public School. 5. Teacher Moderator of ‘LEO Club’ of Jamshedpur Public School, which is wing of most prestigious Lions Club, Jamshedpur Chapter.

6. Teacher Moderator of ‘RUBY HOUSE’ (for more than 10 years) of Jamshedpur Public School. 7. Arrangement for visit of my school students for Govt. Science Lab, ex. CSIR-NML Lab, AMD Lab etc. 8. Master in Charge of Science Club at SelaQui International School, Dehradun. 5

STATEMENT BY THE TEACHER:

I am Indrajit Mukherjee, presently working as a PGT Physics and HOD Science in a highly reputed, nationally and internationally famed International School at Dehradun i.e., SelaQui International School, Selaqui, where students from all over the Globe come for quality education. I, being a Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) of Jamshedpur Public School, New Baridih (my previous school), have worked there for last 25 years. Initially, I felt a little hesitated with this profession but with the passage of time, I realised the nobleness and experienced the beauty of this job. Now, teaching is no more a job to me, instead it has become a mission of my life to educate and guide the students in all spheres of life.

I find this, a good platform to share some good experience with the world. Today, when I sit in solitude and look back upon the years that have passed by, I can view my students who are working at different places of the world successfully. When I see my student Dr. Sidharth, who after passing from IIT Kharagpur, is working with many eminent Nobel Prize winning scientists in USA, Markandey serving for our country with brave and courage as Colonel in Indian Army, Sneha has made to the pages of world famous newspaper, Pratik who won the 1

st

prize representing IIT Kharagpur for an International Car Making & Designing Competition last year, the list goes on when I see them performing so well in their careers, I feel that I have been successful and their success is my reward. Recently in the year 2016-17, we were one of the four schools out of 595 schools who made it to the website of NITI AAYOG (formerly known as Planning Commission of India) under ATL, a dream Project by Government of India. My photograph was published there as one of the mentors of the team. Finally, our school got a project funding of Rs. 20,00,000 ( Rs. Twenty Lakhs) to install and to maintain a dream Science Laboratory in our school premises. With the sincere support of our respected Principal ma’am, I have been given a pivotal role as a mentor to make this project successful. I profess and practise that a good teacher should have love for his profession. He should be seriously and sincerely committed to his duties and work. Also he should be clear in speech and should be able to convey his ideas to his pupils with ease and effectiveness. As such he must be on the path of excellence both for his own personal achievements and that of his pupils. Sincerely speaking, I believe that, I have been able to inculcate all the above mentioned qualities in myself as a teacher and I have done justice to the profession which I chose over two decades ago.

A teacher by nature should be truth loving and plain in his speech. He must have enough courage to say the right thing as right and wrong ones as wrong. There should not be any ambiguity in his thoughts and saying. And truly speaking, throughout my life I have maintained all of these virtues. I, as a teacher, try to be an example of hard work and sincerity so as to inspire my students to acquire a taste for learning, develop curiosity and at the same time I also try to inspire them to be humble, stay rooted as well as share responsibilities with peers, with all my keenness and sincerity. I personally believe that a good teacher teaches but the best teacher is he who inspires. A teacher cannot be with his students throughout his life but I try to place myself amidst their soul in such a way that at every crucial and decisive moment of their life they find me by their side to guide them through all odds. If at such important moments they are able to judiciously utilize the knowledge and thoughts that I have imparted to them, that, in true sense will be my real achievement and award. 6
