Dept. of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Old Dominion University Aug 2009 - Dec 2012 Research Assistant

Research: Study of meteorological controls of fecal-indicator bacteria (FIB) in local waters. I approached this work through weekly and monthly monitoring campaigns. I have also compared two methods to enumerate E. coli from environmental samples. Taught introductory Oceanography as a teaching assistant for 4 years. Extensive statistical analysis of data was done using SigmaPlot 11.0, MATLAB, SAS, R, SAS SQL and Microsoft Office. National Institute of Ocean Technology (India) Dec 2006 - Mar 2008 Research Associate

Research: I worked on Biofouling and the characterization of biofilms from various metal surfaces, titanium surfaces in specific. I dealt with the characterization of the microfouling from biofilms with extra attention on Sulphur reducing bacteria for which I standardized the medium and extracted DNA which was then sent for sequencing. Biostatistics was done using Microsoft office.

Marine Biotechnology Division National Institute of Oceanography (India) Dec 2005 - Aug 2006 Research Assistant

Research: I worked on deep -sea sediment fungi. Project included both Molecular biology and Microbiological work. The Molecular biology aspect was to find whether the deep-sea isolates and their counterpart terrestrial cultures of the same species, were of different strains. Their DNA was extracted and amplified for the ITS region using PCR. The PCR products were subjected to enzyme digestion by RFLP. Along with this I also studied the effect of various deep-sea factors such as elevated hydrostatic pressure, low temperature, heat and nutrients on spore germination. This part involved almost all of the fundamental techniques in Microbiology such as microscopy, isolation, identification and culturing among other things. Besides the use of standard laboratory equipment, I also used equipment such as the thermocycler (MJ Research, U.S.A.) for my PCR experiments and deep-sea culture vessels (Tsurumi & Seiki Co., Japan) for my experiments under elevated hydrostatic pressure.

Data analysis was done using Microsoft Office.
