Miguel Martinez-Violante is an Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Safety and Lean Six Sigma consultant with over 22 years of combined industry and consulting experience. Miguel has worked with dozens of small, medium and large manufacturers in automotive, appliances, aerospace, electronics, food & beverage, semiconductors, among others. Miguel is a Six Sigma and Lean expert and has been involved in lean transformations of manufacturing environments since 1996. Lead all engineering activities and projects, and establish operative and design standards for Hardware and Software platforms, project execution, and installation strategy.

Co-founded the company since February 2014.

Contributed to make the company to be approved as preferred contractor for CMTC, UC Merced and Fresno State SBDC and Fresno State WET in the disciplines of Lean Manufacturing, Safety, Process Automation, Product and Design validation, Software development among others.

Achieved to get Applied Engineering Solutions recognized as Lean Manufacturing and Safety expert and we have helped several customers to achieve their goals to reduce waste, improve efficiency, implement flexibility, reduce downtime, and increase the profitability of their operations. All of these achievements through disruptive Lean and Safety implementations in their workplaces with safety and ergonomics as the main drivers of our efforts.

Led a project for Katcon, S.A. de C.V. to develop and build 3 Catalytic Converter Parametric Testers for reliability and performance evaluation, design validation and other general engineering tests. These testers are completely automated and perform flow, pressure, temperature, vibration and electrical tests to the UUTs under certain programmatic conditions and also submerged in water. A $1.4M dollars project total.

Led a project for the company Avogy in SF Bay Area, to develop an End Product Parametric Manufacturing Test System, a Board Level Parametric Manufacturing Test System, and an End Product Manufacturing Hi-Pot Test System for a high efficiency Power Adapter (Zolt). This system had very high complexity due to the nature of the product, the extremely short test time required and the reliability challenge due to the high volumes required by the customer. It was a great success for the company in terms of project execution, quality of the delivered solutions, on time delivery, great customer satisfaction and great financial success. This was a $440K dollars, including more than 400 product development consulting hours.

Functions and main responsibilities

Launch a Global Industrialization Team for new product introduction in the Buildings Business Unit (a $2B dollars business unit).

Implement PMP as the platform to all the activities related to the different project stages and their related tasks to guarantee the accomplishment of the business objectives in terms of Product cost, Quality and Time to market.

Develop and implement test platforms and test strategies for different products and subassemblies, involving ICT, Boundary Scan, Functional Test, Flying probe, Final product level tests in different Software platforms like LabVIEW, TestStand, C#, .NET, JAVA, etc.

Design and implement the manufacturing process based on Safety, Lean Manufacturing, and Six Sigma principles.

Design and implement the Supply Chain, Upstream with suppliers, NPI buyers and Procurement and Downstream with Distribution centers for MTS or directly with customers for MTO, ETO products, supporting the corporate SIOP implementation strategy.

Responsible for transferring all the corresponding knowledge related to the projects from R&D and Industrialization to manufacturing plants around the world.

Design and implement all the necessary mechanic and electronic assembly tools, fixtures and gauges to do the manufacturing activities to efficiently manufacture a product.

Reinforce the “Design for Manufacturability”, “Design for Assembly” and “Design for Test” policies with the R&D group through periodic design reviews in each new product at the board and product assembly level.

Make sure to comply at all times with the Quality Systems (ISO) in any NPI implementation and perform Quality Systems, Safety and Lean Manufacturing audits in manufacturing facilities and design centers around the world.

Impulse collaboration with the Industrialization groups in Clovis in California, Fort Collins in Colorado, Malmo and Stockholm in Sweden, and Wuxi in China.

Industrialize projects up to 20 Million US dollars of investment per project. Main achievements

Successfully created the Industrialization Group for the Buildings Business Unit with the purpose of launching all the new product introduction efforts in any of the 13 BU factories around the world.

Collaborated with the engineering teams corresponding to the Industrialization department and personally participated in projects with most of the team members around the world. Participated in test projects in US, China, Sweden, and France with collaboration with technical engineering resources from the US and Europe.

Optimized our own version of the PMP process to better fit our capabilities and needs on every project taking into consideration the cultural diversity of the group and the geographic situation of every factory in terms of local work legislations and relations with localized suppliers.

Successfully launched more than 45 new products from simple water valves and actuators all the way to highly complex IP cameras with micro BGA devices and “package on package” technologies in it over 17 layers PCBs. By far, the most complex technology ever manufactured and successfully launched in Schneider Electric globally.

Achieved 98% FPY (2% MDR) in every new product launched before transferring them to manufacturing. Learning curve (production start-up) period of time was used to troubleshoot gauges, tools, test equipment and manufacturing processes to guarantee to deliver the product on time to the customer at the right manufacturing process quality levels.

Accomplished alignment in every project to the value proposition and the customer logistics offer and I was also successful in keeping the product and project cost under control and achieving the expected manufacturing process quality and to deliver the product on time as scheduled in the master program.

Accomplished the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles in every single project to maximize efficiency and minimize waste and do much more with less and have a better use of the floor space in the factories “shop floors” and clean rooms. $12M project total dispersed in 3 years.

Executed projects for PEMEX, the Mexican Oil & Gas Company where customized engineering was required. We successfully developed a Wireless Automation Controller to operate continuously in extreme environments under 10 ft. of water with no electricity which was a total financial success for the company.

Won contracts with Water-Waste Water entities to implement, our company designed, real- time telemetry and reporting system. Where we were able to remotely measure pressure, energy used in the substations, pump status (ON-OFF), levels of water tanks, inlet and outlet water flow to match real water delivery to invoicing water amount.

Developed a true expertise in Project Management of small, medium, and large-scale projects.

Definitely, I learned about being a business owner and the challenges and opportunities it comes with. It is a rewarding experience and helped me to get financial security for my family through the coming years. I sold the company back in 2011 before coming to the USA due to security concerns in that area, but definitely gave me a much broader vision of businesses overall.

Oct/2000 - Jul/2004; As the Product and Test Engineering Manager of the company VTI Technologies, having to my responsibility all the test equipment Hardware and Software development for different products lines in their facilities in Mexico. Lead all the activities of the test equipment department through the assigned personnel.

Require operational budgets, and coordinate acquisitions and expenses of the department.

Design and develop test equipment for new products every year, and elaborate continuous improvement plans for all the testers already installed.

Organize the preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance activities in the test area, to diminish downtime, dead time, and avoid excessive costs in replacement parts and warehouse stocks.

Organize and lead the product engineering group, which was part of the test equipment department, so this way I made sure that technical personnel had a deeper knowledge in the technology applied to new products among the different product families that were manufactured in that facility from both sides (Test and Product).

Collaborate in the ISO and QS 9000 and 14000 certification process.

Be an ISO and QS internal auditor for the corporate.

Integrate the facility to the corporation to interchange technical information among both places and strategically position the test equipment department as an R&D center. Achieved the design and product validation of different audio system models for diverse automotive brands and models such as Chevrolet, Pontiac, Cadillac, Saturn, Volkswagen, Toyota and some aftermarket models like Rockford Fosgate and Bose.

Accomplished significant cost reduction improvements in current production products through continuous improvement projects. Products ranged from steering wheel controls to high-end audio systems and amplifiers.

Successfully transferred entire manufacturing cells for audio products between manufacturing facilities in USA and Mexico. Implemented best practices and became an expert in the Delphi Manufacturing System implementation.

Successfully developed and implemented an Automated Vision Inspection System for radio trim plates, lighting verification, buttons verification, laser markings verification among others. The implementation included 200 stations around the manufacturing facility.
