Successfully restructured program to provide timely, peer reviewed reports with recommendations addressing emerging and important issues in the microbial sciences. This is the premier program of the Academy producing high quality reports in the area of microbiological sciences relying on the expertise of Academy fellows. For the first time under my leadership, reports were made available on PubMed and used as the basis of draft federal guidance.

Successfully restructured the Science and Technology for Sustainability Program to provide critical, cross-functional results in the area of sustainability by engaging internationally-recognized scientific experts, Executive Branch official, (e.g., DOE, EPA, NSF, USGS, OMB), congressional staff, state officials and corporate leaders. In less than three years, grew the sustainability program to a multi-faceted entity that addresses the most pressing sustainability science and technology challenges in government, industry, and society.
Identified new research challenges and approaches to effect positive change by building successful cross-sectoral partnerships, accelerated the development of reports, initiated simultaneous research efforts and launched complex public outreach dissemination campaigns relying on printed reports, video, the Internet, face-to-face meetings, and workshops.
In slightly over a year, turned around a nearly bankrupt program in 2009 increasing the budget by an order of magnitude by prioritizing and catalyzing state of the art science and technology research.
