Self Employed In Home Child Care 1995-1998

In 1995, I opened my first in home childcare. I cared for only two children at a time. I

wanted to give the children in my care the attention they deserved. I cared for one child

from age 6 months to 5 years, when he went into preschool. I became pregnant with my first and only child in January of 1998.

My son was born with a cleft lip and palate in September of 1998, at that time, I became a full time mother, caring for my son's special medical needs.

Organizer and Provider Support Group for Parent of Cleft Affected Infants 1999

In 1999, my son was a year old, and I had experienced the difficulties and fears that came with caring for a child with craniofacial birth defects.

Because of mine and my son's experiences, I approached the hospital he was born in,

Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC, and asked if I could volunteer to assist other parents whose children were cleft affected.

Together with the assistance of the University of North Carolina's Craniofacial Center's

physicians and parent advocate, Kim Ulrich, we created a free service for parents of cleft affected infants.

We had special bottles called “Pigeon Bottles”, manufactured in Japan, donated to Rex Hospital.

UNC's, Kim Ulrich and I developed and organized on a workshop for the NICU nurses

at Rex Hospital instructing them how to properly use the “Pigeon Bottle”.

I would respond to the hospital hours after a cleft affected child was born to meet and council with new parents to help ease their fears and concerns for their newborn child and teach them how to use these special bottles to feed their child until cleft repair surgery could be performed.

I also began the first Raleigh, NC chapter of AboutFace, a resource and support group for families affected by all craniofacial defects which was founded in Canada in 1985.
