Customer: eSylvan learning Mar 2005 - Oct 2005

The goal of this project is to create a low-cost alternative for a student learning system using Linux as the operating system and using VoIP as the medium of communication. This project has been implemented in two phases. The first phase involved research for finding an existing solution for a VoIP client (softphone) on the Linux platform with the right codec. Once it was found that there are no existing softphones available for Linux with the required codec built-in, the second phase of the project started. The second phase involved designing a complete solution with the following criteria:

Integrate an existing softphone and an existing commercial codec and integrate this softphone into eSylvan’s Learning Environment software.

Create a startup wizard that will walk the end-user through with setting up one or two users with passwords who have minimal privileges.

Create a dialer setup and configuration wizard that will walk the end-user through with selecting a phone number that is closer to the end-user’s home area by downloading that area’s access numbers by first dialing a toll free number and then configuring the dialer to use the selected phone number(s) to connect to the Internet.

Create a dialer application that will use the phone number(s) selected above and connect the end-user to the Internet to use the Learning Environment to learn from a tutor in a one-on-one session.

Setup a desktop computer with Linux and configure it so that the end-user has minimal permissions (enough to run the Learning Environment and some other basic applications like browser, word processor and email)

Create an image of the desktop computer so that the multiple computers can be setup based on the image with minimal effort.

Responsibilities include:

Project management of the VoIP project

Research and build the proof of concept

Linux Admin for the project.

As a technical lead, designed the solution and supervised and advised programmers in coding and implementation.

As a Linux admin, setup and configured the desktop computer for end-user with proper access privileges, installed all the required applications including the Learning Environment. Created the final image of the computer for replication on to computers with similar hardware.

Tested each of the components and the final solution completely to eliminate bugs. Also tested with eSylvan to make sure they are satisfied with the delivered solution.
