SEMINAR PRESENTATIONS

Completed the seminar on the topic, “Study on Thermal Barrier Coatings for Engine life and efficiency”.

Abstract: - Over many decades, aircraft researchers and manufacturers mostly focus on achieving higher efficiencies, lower specific fuel consumption and reduced aircraft engine emissions. In order to achieve this, the Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) were introduced which provides reduction in friction and wear. In order to increase the engine thermal efficiency, the combustion temperature is increased which reduces the amount of production of pollutants like carbon monoxide etc. Thus, barrier coatings are applied on jet turbine blades to protect them from higher temperature gases and to achieve better engine performance.

Completed the seminar on the topic, “Space Debris”. Abstract: - Space debris consists of millions of pieces of man-made material orbiting the earth. Debris possess a growing threat to satellites and could prevent the use of valuable orbits in the future. Approximately 2/3 of active satellites are used for communications. The rest are split roughly equally between navigation, military surveillance, earth observation and remote sensing, astrophysics and space physics, and Earth science and meteorology. In the long term, experts agree that it will be necessary to remove debris from orbit, but this is technically and politically challenging.

UG PROJECT

Completed UG Project with the title “Design of a 100Newton hydrogen peroxide monopropellant rocket thruster” at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram.

Abstract: - Efforts are on all over the world towards development of environment friendly propellants that can replace the toxic earth storable propellant in use. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the environment friendly propellants that can generate non-toxic decomposition products, which is oxygen and superheated steam making it as an ideal green propellant. Hydrogen peroxide that can act as a monopropellant or as an oxidizer is ideal for spacecraft propulsion. Platinum or silver coated stainless steel grids are used as catalyst for the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The project deals with designing a rocket thruster by using hydrogen peroxide as monopropellant.
