Responsible for creating registries and analytic data sets used for retrospective research studies along with migration and backup of various registries, databases and datasets.
Act as CHOP contact person in Pediatric IBD Network (ImproveCareNow Enhanced Registry) project that is using SHRINE to create modular pediatric chronic disease registry for Quality Improvement and Clinical Effectiveness research.
Developed online tool that replaces pseudo identifiers by real identifiers in Pre-visit Planning and Population Management reports that are part of ImproveCareNow project.
Implemented I2B2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) framework instance for patients in the Gastroenterology Department mapping demographic, anthropometric, laboratory, medication and other data stored in CHOP Data Warehouse to I2B2 ontology format.
Created I2B2 instance for Healthy Weight Clinic Registry. Validated registry data derived from Clarity vs. CHOP Data Warehouse using I2B2 as a query tool.
Participated in data collection, manipulation and validation for Impact of Antibiotics in Infancy on Early Childhood Obesity study.
University of Pennsylvania, Division of General Internal Medicine
Senior Programmer/Database Analyst
Office of Human Research, 1997-2012
Actively participated in the planning, creation, development and implementation of the Pennsylvania Integrated Clinical and Administrative Research Database (PICARD), a comprehensive database capturing the longitudinal detail of clinical care on over 2 million patients throughout the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Developed the data model and performed periodic manual data loads, created automated ETL routines in PHP. Conducted data validation and integration from both commercial information resources such as EPIC Clarity, IDX Analyzer, McKesson Horizon Performance Manager, as well as numerous custom health system databases. Scheduled and performed backups and recoveries.
Collaborated with clinical investigative teams to query and interpret the contents of PICARD to address research information needs required for study planning and subject recruitment. Created data marts and analytic data sets needed for retrospective research studies. Constructed complex temporal queries to create cohorts based on combinations of diagnostic, procedural, laboratory, scheduling, financial and demographic criteria.
Managed hardware and software issues related to performance issues associated with large data volumes.
Developed an MS Access-based utility for calculating the Charlson co-morbidity index based on a point system applied to the presence of specific diagnoses.
Programmed in PHP to create custom web based data collection instruments, and dynamic information visualization tools that present the most currently available data on established study cohorts
Collaborated with the Health System Data Warehouse group to create the Penn Data Store, an enterprise-level evolution of the PICARD database. Researched Eclipsys Sunrise Clinical Manager system for incorporation in Penn Data Store and as part of PICARD services.
Responsible for the UPHS implementation of I2B2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) framework that provides clinical researchers with a self-service tool to query existing clinical data for discovery research. Performed the initial software installation and developed and implemented monthly on-demand ETL processes to map PICARD and Penn Data Store data into I2B2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside).
Worked on UPHS implementation of REDCap, including initial installation and updates to software. Programmed plug-ins to extend its functionality by creating a tool to migrate I2B2 data into REDCap, and enabling an automated scheduling module to send email reminders to participants about the need to take an upcoming survey. Developed, created and supported web-based database empowered tools, such as the, Clinical Trial Listing Service tool, Budget Management tool, and a procedure cost finder tool and a number of other utilities using HTML/PHP/JavaScript front end and Oracle back end.
