November 2009-present Director, Environmental Health and Safety, Special Metals Corporation (a PCC/ Berkshire Hathaway Company)

SMC is a world leader in the invention, production and supply of high-nickel, high- performance alloys including ingots, billets, plate, sheet, strip, tubing, bar and wire.

Hired by the President of SMC to create the strategic vision for, and lead the global deployment of, Environmental, Health, and Safety programs across all operations and provide guidance and support for Plant-level Operations and EHS leadership at 41 sites in ten countries.

Accomplishments:

One of six founders of the PCC Safety Council created to drive improvement across the corporation.

Implemented a cloud-based software system for EHS management.

Achieved 76% reduction in total recordable incidence rates and 60% reduction in lost workday case rates.

Reduced direct costs of Workers’ Compensation by over 60%.

Worked with PCC legal department to develop the Cross-Divisional Environmental Audit program.

Served as the Lead Auditor, or participated in 26 international EHS audits.

Managed multi-million dollar environmental reserves for efficient resolution or remediation of issues.

1993-2009 Senior Manager, Environmental Health and Safety, Excel Polymers, LLC

Excel is the leading global supplier or rubber chemicals, compounds, and services. (Formerly a division of PolyOne Corporation, the world’s largest polymer services company)

Responsible for all EHS, Workers’ Compensation, and Product Stewardship areas of the corporation. (10 sites in the U.S., China, Europe, and Mexico) Directed the activities of the EHS department, including three EHS/product stewardship staff and plant EHS Managers. Duties included accident investigation and analysis; coordination of and participation in third-party environmental and safety audits at all sites; completion of environmental permit applications and reports; writing, implementing, and training on safe procedures; supervision of in-house industrial hygiene monitoring program; Product Stewardship including authoring Material Safety Data Sheets, raw materials approvals, IMDS, REACH implementation, and providing EHS assistance to customers; co-manage Risk Management and insurance programs.

Accomplishments:

Established a culture where safety is integrated into production operations.

Achieved 87% reduction in recordable incidence rates and 94% reduction in lost workday case rates as the business unit grew from four to as many as 14 sites over 16 years.

Reduced direct costs of Workers’ Compensation by more than 90%.

Provided EHS oversight to the successful start-up of multi-million dollar production facilities in the U.S., Mexico, China, and Europe.

Managed the EHS aspects of five acquisitions and successfully implemented a new safety culture for each.

Member of task force that developed corporate Safety standards for 88 manufacturing sites in 16 countries.

Worked with the Information Technology project team to implement the SAP module for MSDS authoring.

Implemented a behavior-based observation program to increase participation in pro-active hazard reduction.

1992-1993 Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator, General Electric Company Niles/Mahoning Glass

Member of the Plant Manager’s staff responsible for all EHS areas, providing input to the overall operating plan and other management issues at two manufacturing facilities. Duties included accident investigation, daily interaction with medical clinic (full-time R.N. and part-time M.D.), completion of all environmental reports, environmental monitoring (including two electrostatic precipitators), hazardous waste management, safety training, and security.

Accomplishments:

Successfully installed a new wastewater pre-treatment system, which allowed a bulb staining process to resume operations.

Reduced trash disposal costs with installation of a compactor and segregation system. First year savings = $46K.

Implemented a bio-monitoring program (aquatic toxicity) in accordance with NPDES requirements.

Initiated a process modification and installed new equipment to correct oil and grease compliance issue.

Negotiated a favorable NPDES permit modification by performing a stream pH and alkalinity study.

Formed ergonomics team to review plant processes.

1989-1991 Corporate Compliance Manager, Easco Aluminum Corporation

Easco was the largest independent aluminum extruder in the U.S.

Was responsible for all safety and environmental issues at 15 divisions nationwide. Duties included: developing safety policy, conducting air sampling, performing audits, investigating accidents, reviewing loss control reports, coordinating responses to litigation concerning accident claims and Superfund liability, directing the activities of an outside environmental consultant in the remediation efforts at three New Jersey ECRA sites, chemical substitution projects, SARA Title III compliance, preparing air and water permit applications, hazardous waste compliance, and training. The position reported to the Executive Vice-President of Human Resources and Administration.

Accomplishments:

Achieved significant reduction in the number of accidents and associated costs.

Initiated a process change that eliminated the use and emission of Methylene Chloride.

Wrote and implemented the Corporate Safety Policy.

Created a strong awareness of the importance of safety and environmental issues throughout the corporation.

1988-1989 Safety and Health Coordinator, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency

Wrote standard operating procedures, implemented the Medical Monitoring and Respirator Fit-Testing programs, conducted accident investigations and field consultations, and provided workers compensation assistance. Responsible for the safety of 750 employees in five statewide district offices. Reported to the Deputy Director of the agency.
