DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a staff nurse, my duties and responsibilities in the ward includes, daily inventory, take over the patient case sheet, medication and all other things from the previous duty staff.

Making a clean bed and prepare the ward and arranging emergency trolley.

Visiting each patient and observing them, checking their physical, psychological nutritional status, and level of consciousness.

Administration of therapies.

Attending doctors orders and assisting them for various procedures like lumbar punctual, paracenthesis, thoracenthesis, and pleural aspiration, biopsies of bone marrow, spleen, liver and kidney, I & D exploration, foreign body removal, POP application and cutting, application of skin traction, tendon repair, manipulation and closed reduction, endotracheal intubation, CPR, major and minor dressing, DC shock, pacing, venesection, sheeth removal tracheotomy etc.

Maintaining sterile techniques, carrying out doctor’s order, collection and sending specimens for investigation including culture. Pre & post operative care to the surgery patient. Independently carrying out nursing procedures like urinary catheterization, nasogastric feeding, administration of therapeutics after safety check up upto date and time, recording of nurses record, checking vital signs and placement of IV lines, monitory ECG, O2 saturation, bowel and bladder wash T & P observing and informing if any changes.

Supervising and guiding juniors, staff and auxiliary nurses.

Checking the general store items and other stock medicines including the expiry date. Receiving admission, discharging the patient and giving discharge advice and health education. Co-ordinate the work handed over to the next duty staff and inform sister in charge whatever happens in the ward

CASES ENCOUNTERED

Cardiogenic problems such as Myocardial infraction, Myocarditis, Pulmonary edema, cardiogenic shock, CCF, Cardiomyopathy, Arrhythmias also patients under went ANGIOGRAM OR CORONARY ANGIOPLASTY.

DM leading to hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma.

COPD, Bronchial Asthma, Pneumothorax.

Pneumonia.

Respiratory failure requiring artificial ventilation

Cirrhosis of liver, hepatic coma, Hepatitis.

Ischemic heart disease

Neurological disorders like CVA.

Congestive Cardiac Failure

Communicable diseases like Malaria, AIDS, Cholera, Typhoid and Dengue Fever

Heart Blocks with temporary and permanent pacemakers.
