I started as a radio newsman, and announcer on the Cincinnati Reds Baseball Network. A decade later I was working NFL and NBA games for CBS Sports on weekends and The CBS EVENING NEWS on weekdays.
I worked on The CBS EVENING NEWS from the Los Angeles Bureau. We were in a constant state of shooting, editing and producing last minute Pacific Region and West Coast based stories for live incorporation into the east coast broadcast. Three hours later we would broadcast an updated “Western Edition of the CBS Evening News”.
Most recently I have reported News and Traffic on WRCJ, Detroit and live, helicopter Traffic on FOX 2, Detroit and before that WWJ News Radio Detroit and SiriusXM Detroit Satellite Radio services.
As a WPFB news reporter I left the anchor desk and covered racial and civil unrest in the streets of Cincinnati. I covered the human-interest side of the bigger, hard news events of that week. Before the week was out my heart was sickened at the sights of The Queen City being ripped apart. I sought out and found silver linings of human hope and kindness in the eye smarting clouds of smoke across the city. The hope and silver linings were my stories.
During my fifty-two weeks of Vietnamese occupation, I filed thirty-one two to five minute taped human-interest stories called Vietnam Periodical to WPFB from the battlefields of Vietnam while serving in the U.S. ARMY Infantry. Listener demands called for many to be repeated as Periodical related the war from a soldier’s perspective.
Upon my return to the states from Vietnam, I joined WAVI in Dayton, OH as Reporter-Anchor.
I covered the courts, City Hall, and anchored afternoon drive time twice-hourly newscasts. In the evenings, I anchored the hourly newscasts for sister station, WDAO. This was a high-profile news operation under News Director, Paul Burke, who came to us from WRC. Each week I would write, produce and voice half a dozen weekend lifestyle features for both stations.
At WEBN, I maintained high Arbitron ratings in the Album Oriented Rock format, and additionally hosted a Sunday night talk show dealing with local issues important in Cincinnati at the time. I have the awkward distinction of being one of those who put then hopeful candidate for city council, Jerry Springer on the air for the first time. Literally that night the “monster” was born. Sitting in front of his microphone after we were off air his eyes widened as he exclaimed, “this is wonderful!” The world has me to blame.
During free hours, I flew with Commander Chuck Street in the KIIS-FM traffic chopper. I enjoy flying rotor wing aircraft and got to know LA rush-hour traffic reporting from that P.O.V.
My autobiography: MY OVERDUE BOOK Too Many Stories Not To Tell: is available on Amazon & Kindle, Barnes & Noble. Reaction coast to coast has been strong.
I am purposeful and quick to react to live situations.

Broadcast News Philosophy
My philosophy on broadcasting, production and reporting begins with facts. Facts are the cornerstone for any story. We may hear about something that happened. Hearsay may indicate there is a problem, or that some one, group or organization has stepped out of bounds. That is only the beginning for a story. It is where the reporter-producer starts.
Digging for the truth demands tenacity on the part of any reporter. Producers rely on having reporters who will go that extra mile to ensure that the story they file has answered the who, what, when, where, why and how, the foundations of any story. There should be no doubt dangling about a story. If there is a question left unanswered, I believe a story should be held until the facts are clear and beyond doubt.
Ethics play an important part in the act of digging for a story. We are the press, not the police, prosecutor, judge or jury. We can ask a thousand questions and try to get answers to what we believe are the important issues regarding a story. But we must operate within the boundaries of responsible newsgathering. The minute we cross the line and attempt to “create” increments of a story, we do not belong in the news reporting business.
One of my operative words is authenticity. The writing, reporting and sound bites, that is to say, everything that goes on air must be authentic.
Where there’s smoke, there may be fire, but until the source for the smoke is undeniably clear as to its origin, the report will wait for verification.
