2006 (Jan-March) Cues Inc. Orlando, FL

Mechanical Design Engineer

This was a short term contract designing underground drain repair, cleaning, and inspection robots.

2005 - 2006 Full-House, Inc Melbourne FL

Mechanical Design Engineer

This was a medium term contract. I designed a CNC 3 axis routing machine and a couple of smaller projects all for the manufacture of internal household and commercial doors and frames. Used Solidworks 2005 and Cosmos

2003 - 2005 GSMA Systems, Inc. (now part of SWF companies)

Senior Mechanical Engineer

I joined this company full time (after previous contract work) working on custom assembly systems and packaging machinery. I worked a lot with robots designing tooling and end effectors. The work involved designing custom packaging cells that are installed on the end of existing production lines. Often we would put the product into cartons, then pack cartons into cases, and finally pack the cases onto pallets and shrink wrap them. Used Solidworks 2003/4

1994 - 2003 Contract Design Engineer (USA)

After moving to Florida in November '94 I started my own contracting business (Desico Design). I did engineering projects for many local companies; the most significant are listed below.

On these contracts I used a mix of AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, and Solidworks

Facet Inc. Melbourne, FL

Design Engineer - Complex assembly machinery design and development.

I had full project responsibility for many large projects right from initial meetings with customers all the way to installation and hand off. I designed several machines for the assembly of medical, automotive and consumer products. I utilized dial and linear indexers, bowl and centrifugal feeders as well as designing custom indexing chassis when needed. I did have a joint patent underway on one particular custom part feeder design.

Profold Inc. Sebastian, FL

Project Engineer - Paper folding and handling equipment.

I worked on several modifications to existing equipment, and designed and developed from scratch two completely new folding machines. A company installation engineer told me that one of my designs was the best brand new product he'd ever installed and commissioned.

TCI Inc. Melbourne, FL

Custom machinery and system design.

I worked on assembly machines and some custom mail handling machines for the USPS based in their sorting offices.

GSMA Systems, Inc. Palm Bay, FL

Custom assembly machine design for major customers in the medical and automotive field.

I had full project responsibility for many large projects. A typical machine could have 8 to 10 bowl feeders, 4 to 6 robots and 10 to 20 custom stations for conventional pick and place, insertion, staking, ultrasonic welding, HF welding, adhesive or lubricant application, test and inspection (often using vision systems), and many others. The work here was very varied; one project could be inspecting X-ray tubes with Geiger counters, and the next would be inspecting and handling wooden pallets.

Earlier U.K. positions

1990 - 1994 Rockwell graphic systems (UK)

Mechanical Design Engineer

Here I worked on newspaper printing press and folder design and development. I was heavily involved in high speed continuous motion machine design, as this equipment could print/fold up to 70,000 copies per hour. I was given responsibility for large sections of the whole machine. I designed several remote adjustment mechanisms so that key settings could be changed on the fly as well as many drive and feeding systems. This was my first full time CAD usage using CADAM

1985 - 1990 Unit Press PLC (UK)

Welding Engineer / Works Engineer.

As a welding engineer I was responsible for integration and programming of welding robots and welding fixture design. Then I became the works engineer responsible for all new plant and equipment.

I designed several automated welding and assembly machines, which were still in production 15 years later, along with numerous jigs and fixtures.

1980 - 1985 SVC Ltd (UK)

Development Engineer / Technical Director.

I had full project responsibility from start to finish on specialist automotive design projects. I worked on chassis and suspension design taking concepts right through to testing, including design of all production jigs and fixtures.

Hobbies and interests

I am a very keen amateur car builder. Rather than restore existing cars I like to build them from scratch taking advantage of the engineering skills I have picked up along the way. Big motorsport fan especially F1.

I also enjoy travelling, movies and books and following the trials and tribulations of my hometown soccer team Preston North End.
