This summer I had the unique opportunity to take a travel assignment, where I worked in the Intensive care unit at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco California. This is a 24 bed intensive care unit which works with a variety of critically ill patients. Working at California Pacific Medical Center I have had the unique opportunity to expand my knowledge by being introduced to liver and heart transplant patients as well as building on my existing critical care skills. Registered Nurse Intensive Care Unit
Providence Memorial Hospital - El Paso, TX -
2000-05 - 2001-05
This unit consists of twelve beds and receives a variety of patients. The average nurse to patient ratio is 1:2. Having a 1:2 nurse/patient ratio allowed me to work closely with my patients and involve myself in all aspects of their care. This low nurse to patient ratio also allowed me to work closely with a mentor and learn the needed skills as a critical care nurse. These skills include medication constitution and administration, invasive hemodynamic monitoring (swan- ganz, central venous pressure etc), ekg interpretation, caring for critically ill patients, and essential critical thinking skills.
