WORK EXPERIENCE

Staff Engineer Mechanical Design, Western Digital Co., Fremont CA, August 2003 – Dec 2015

Responsible for designing, modeling, simulating, and analyzing of an ABS (air bearing surface) of a Magnetic head of a computer Hard Disc Drive for mass production.

ABS is a surface of a computer head that support heads (using air pressure between rotating disc and ABS) to fly over the rotating disc approximately at 10 nm or above without any contact during reading/writing from/to a data disc. The disc rotates at various rpms e.g. 5400, 7200, 10000 and 15000 as specification requires. The size of Magnetic head varies at different form factors (i.e. L, Length, W, Width and H, Height) such as Femto, Pico, and Nano form factors.

Specialty Program (Magnetic Head Size, L 2.05 mm X W1.6 mm X H 0.43 mm):

Burnish Head: Responsibilities, of designing, modeling, simulating, analyzing and optimizing an ABS used for burnishing Spinning Discs., yield improved approximately from~88% to~95%. Helped save and earned millions of dollars. Those heads are being used and will be used for foreseeable future.

Glide Head: Responsibilities, of designing, modeling, simulating, analyzing and optimizing an ABS for glide head which detects surface roughness of a spinning disc, also improved yields of the discs performance.

Linearly Fly Height Varying Head: Responsibilities, of designing, modeling, simulating, analyzing and optimizing an ABS for linearly varying Fly height relative to rpm variations for Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording R & D project. This head is being used and will be used for foreseeable future.

Femto Programs (Magnetic Head Size, L 0.85 mm X W 0.70 mm X H 0.23 mm):

Aries Head: Responsibilities, of designing the First Femto format ABS with the first implementation of DFH (Dynamic Fly Height) technology, at 5400 rpm, earned millions of dollars for the company.

Olympus Head: Responsibilities, of designing, simulating, developing, analyzing, and optimizing an ABS first time for a Hard Disc Drive filled with Helium-Air combination instead of conventional fluid air only at 7200 rpm. With a first try the ABS with the fluid Helium-Air performed exactly as per specifications required for volume production. This is a huge success. I received a design high five award.

Pico Programs (Magnetic Head Size, L 1.25 mm X W 1.00 mm X H 0.23 mm):

Scorpio Head: Responsibilities, of designing, developing, simulating, and analyzing an ABS first time to implement Load/Unload technology to load/to unload heads on/from rotating disc at 5400 rpm, this is a huge success and the company earned millions and millions of dollars.

Orion Head: Responsibilities, of designing, developing, simulating, analyzing, and optimizing an ABS first time to implement Load/Unload technology to load/to unload heads on/from 5400 rpm rotating disc with Dynamic Fly Height, company earned millions and millions of dollars.

Sr R & D Engineer, Read Rite Inc, Fremont, CA, Jan,1998-June,2003

Pico Program (Magnetic Head Size, L 2.05 mm X W1.6 mm X H 0.43 mm):

Maverick, Durango, Quantum Eagle Program: Responsibilities, of modeling, simulating, analyzing, and optimizing an ABS for 7200 rpm and 5400 rpm rotating discs. The customers were Western Digital co., Seagate co., and Maxtor co., and the first X-box game console of Microsoft co. used hard disc drive containing those ABS. Company earned millions of dollars.

Nano Programs (Magnetic Head Size, L 2.05 mm X W1.6 mm X H 0.43 mm):

Quasar Program: Responsibilities, of modeling, simulating, analyzing, and optimizing an ABS for Maxtor data storage company. Company earned millions of dollars.

Hunter Program: Responsibilities, of modeling, simulating, analyzing, and optimizing an ABS for Western Digital Data storage company. Company earned millions of dollars.
