As an SHO in Paediatric Dentistry I have gained invaluable experience in the management of complex treatment cases including amelogenesis imperfecta, dentinogensis imperfecta and fluorosis. I have acquired specialist skills in root canal therapy including obturation with mineral trioxide and the thermoplastic obturation systems. I have had the opportunity to use electro-surgery in cases where access has been impaired by gingival overgrowth and investigate suspected tooth fractures with the microscope and I have also performed non vital tooth revascularisation of traumatised central incisors. My posts have enabled me to manage and successfully treat individuals with behavioural issues including anxious and autistic patients. I am also responsible for providing treatment to patients with special needs. My regular inhalation and intravenous sedation sessions enable me to dedicate time to these groups of patients. I am confident in understanding the importance of informed consent and establishing parental responsibility. These issues are significant in child protection cases and serves to highlight the importance of comprehensive record keeping and understanding the role as a clinician in alerting appropriate members of the team.

I carried out treatment under general anaesthetic. My theatre sessions have given me the chance to surgically extract teeth including supernumeraries and expose and bond canines.

I have attended multidisciplinary hypodontia and mixed dentition clinics. This has allowed me to understand the importance of interceptive orthodontics and timely referrals to relevant specialities and appreciate the importance of a multidisciplinary approach.

I was responsible for acceptance, examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment planning of patients referred through the emergency department and from dental or medical practitioners.

On-call experience has improved my confidence and efficiency at treating paediatric and adult patients with dento-facial trauma and other emergencies. It has also improved my communication with anxious children, parents and apprehensive adults. I understand the importance of caring for children and their safeguarding. My G.A pre-assessment duties and frequent performance of dental screenings for medically compromised patients have heightened my awareness of relevant medical challenges of such patients. I routinely reviewed patients following surgery and am responsible for discharging such patients when fit. I also assisted in complex oro-facial procedures including orthognathic, tempromandibular, parotid surgery and major cancer cases. I also took part in joint surgical-orthodontic-restorative and pain clinics. I regularly pre-assess medically compromised patients awaiting elective and emergency surgical procedures under general anaesthetic which require constant communication with doctors of other specialities. My role included initial patient assessments, organising investigations, attending pre-surgical consultations, assisting in surgical procedures, post-operative management and participation in follow-up appointments.
