Work Experience

Unum, Portland, ME 2001 to 11/2018

Technical Support Engineer – Risk Management Team, 2015 to 11/16/2018

Worked to complete several infrastructure upgrades, and in resolving and preventing risks presented by older technologies and security access requirements.

Managed and coordinated several vendor application version upgrades and multiple 32-to-64-bit, SQL Server 2012, Excel 2016, TLS 1.1/1.2 and Windows 2008-to-2012 server infrastructure upgrades for the Unum UUS and Colonial businesses.

Managed the upgrades of several in-house existing ASP.NET C# applications in servers under .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0 and 3.5 and Windows 2008 to .NET Framework 4.5 and Windows 2012 infrastructures. Visual Studio .NET and C# were primarily utilized for these upgrades. Developed WiX and PowerShell scripts for installation of these applications on IIS servers.

Kanban meetings with other team members were utilized daily to keep tasks in a constant move towards completion, without being blocked and awaiting completion of other tasks.

Installed applications in Azure cloud servers in the Development environment – these were the initial steps in an organization-wide move from in-house servers to Azure cloud servers.

Partnered with Ernst and Young auditor teams, Security teams and business client owners to verify Active Directory and RACF security accesses on an ongoing basis.

Redesigned large-scale Active Directory realms and groups in conjunction with SQL Server database infrastructure upgrades.

System Analyst: 2005 – 2015

Handled the daily coverage of and resolution of issues for several web server/batch application systems. Also provided 24/7 support of key Tier 1 batch and web applications and availability.

Participated in the requirements, design and development stages of a Customer File Initiative application, an Electronic iDocument System that replaced an earlier ASP.NET system that used unique indexes in SQL Server for every image. This eliminated the storage of hardcopy in filing cabinets in nationwide Field and Home Offices (paperless offices).

Developed several distributed batch jobs that utilized Teradata, iDocument and SQL Server databases to automatically update Active Directory security settings for iDocument images based on Field Office and Home Office locations, utilizing web services.

Upgraded several WinForms and ASP.NET C# systems to use COM HIS 2010. This was an exhaustive upgrade of all C# applications which required all ComTI calls to be re-coded, and I developed methods that significantly cut down on the time required to do these updates.

Completed in-house application enhancements and infrastructure upgrades to several applications to use more emergent technologies. Upgrades consisted of rewriting VB6 and ASP 3.0 code into ASP.NET C# code, moving applications from Windows NT/2000 to Windows 2003, upgrading .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 to 2.0, and SQL Server 7.0/2000 to SQL Server 2005. Upgraded vendor software such as Infragistics that were utilized by ASP.NET applications frequently, on a semi-annual and annual basis.

Participated in several annual Disaster Recovery exercises of several applications. These ensured that key and critical applications were always recoverable after a system crash, with the servers being in other locations such as Chattanooga and Columbia.

Managed the development of the Customer Electronic Filing ASP.NET web and scanning application which took scanned documents from Lexmark scanners in nationwide Field and Home Offices and placed these in databases that could be viewed online. This replaced the need to have Document scanning units manually create these images.

Developed and enhanced several ASP 3.0 (VBScript) and ASP.NET (C#) intranet applications for a wide range of Unum businesses. These user interfaces utilized scrollable, editable and dynamic datagrids with advanced JavaScript, CSS, XML and state handling programming features, in both native C# grids and Infragistics vendor software grids. These applications used Active Directory to enable and display complex update capabilities for various business client groups (Add, Update, Delete, Global Changes) as determined for each AD group.

Developed several Windows and ASP.NET C# applications that utilized Staffware SEO COM vendor objects for online user interfaces that were part of Workflow applications and in processing resultant metrics data for Workflows.

Senior Programmer Analyst: 2001-2004

Developed several COBOL II programs utilized by CICS to pass data via ComTI and HIS from DB2, IMS and VSAM databases on the mainframe to the distributed environment for online processing in web servers and desktop servers.

Developed several in-house Word macro and MS Access applications for business clients. Some of these were converted from older FoxPro software to different software languages.

Developed REXX/EXEC2/CLIST applications to be executed on legacy mainframe applications where business clients required MVS TSO access.

Developed CICS Command Level programs for the mainframe environment and developed ‘screen scraper’ applications where data was captured from display screens and processed.

Redesigned an application that took files daily from the Bank of America and created DB2 indexes and images that were accessible online in a web application. Converted this system from a VB6 batch system and a Java web application to a C#/ASP.NET application with improved uptimes and 24/7 availability. This was one of the first applications to be developed in C# and ASP.NET at Unum and was a successful pilot project leading to further ASP.NET server-based development, away from older Windows desktop-based applications.
