Independent Consultant, business affiliation to EJL Wireless Research, Principal Analyst (10/2014 – present)

-Focusing on technology research, market evolution and business strategy studies, with focus on 5G NR features (such as mmWave, massive MIMO, LAA etc.), SDN/NFV(open NFV, MANO, CORD etc), C-RAN, IoT(MTC), Unified Communications, open source development etc.

-Completed C-RAN, vEPC and NFV (Network Function Virtualization) technical reports. Provided with consulting report on 5G and IoT technology, and business evaluation to telecom equipment OEM clients

-Played the role as an industry expert through chairing sessions or as keynote speaker in “NFV World Congress”, “SDN and Open-flow World Congress”, and “Carrier Network Virtualization conference”

ZTE (USA) (2005 to 2014) VP/CTO

Joint ZTE (USA) in 2005 and served as a technology and business expert in several management positions, including VP of product management, VP of advanced research and standards, VP/CTO of wireless product and marketing, and VP of strategic planning. My responsibilities include:

-Analyzing market trends and customer requirements, coordinating with customers, business units and product lines, defining mid and long term roadmaps of technology, and product strategy

-Provided the guidance for product R&D teams on technology evolution and strategic R&D direction, responsible for product R&D roadmap

-Coordination with the senior executives and engineering teams of global customers to build up effective strategic partnership.

-Lead and drive customer oriented product strategy and business development for both mobile devices and infrastructure business units. Coordinate and drive project execution with sales, marketing, P&L and senior managements;

-Functioned as a bridge between product design teams and customers to facilitate the effective communications between them through pre-sale and marketing activities;

-Intensively worked on international business development and cooperation. Having worked with 64 telecom service operators over 46 countries;

-Recruited and set up an industry standard team to support global standards activities and advanced research with annual operational budget around US4.5 million. Trained and led the team (more than 100 scientists and engineers) from a clean start to advance quickly and perform in 3GPP, ITU and other standards bodies;

-Defined and drove broadband data network evolution strategy and solution roadmap including radio access network, transport network, core network and mobile device related issues with feature/budget planning and execution;

AT&T Wireless Services, Senior Technical Staff, Team Leader, (Oct. 99 to Apr. 05)

-In CTO’s organization responsible for technology, architecture and standard

-Vendor management on 3G mobile communication specifications development.

-Key contributor to 3GPP specification committee;

-Major contributor to UMTS1800/1900, and AGPS minimum performance specifications, drove VoIP activities in standard organizations (3GPP and IETF)

-Coordinated with vendors and other operators on key standard issues in order to achieve consensus in the industry to meet AT&T’s business objectives;

-Planned and participated AWS’ 3G (UMTS) network Field Operation Approval (FOA);

Metawave Communications (1997 – 1999)

Director, Product Research and Development (Jan. 97 – Sep.99):

-Built and led GSM smart antenna product development team, including the management of a team of 28 engineers which covers multiple expertises in following areas: system engineering, RF design, digital HW design, software design, mechanical engineering and wireless network optimizations. The job function included project planning and budgeting, team building, engineering management, and coordination with manufacturing partners and service provider customers.

-Led a feasibility study group on beam switching and adaptive array smart antenna technology for IS-136 and GSM system.

Nortel Networks, Senior System Engineer, Team Leader, (Mar. 94 - Jan. 97):

-Base station radio product design and development;

-IS-136 specification development as Nortel’s main contributor to the standard community;
