2013-present

Description of Dr. Hirschman's medical consult work Since retiring from The Mount Sinai Medical Center, and especially since leaving New York Medical College at end of 2013, Dr. Hirschman has been dealing with requests for consultative help from patients whose medical problem has not been satisfactorily solved by their physicians or where the prescribed therapy has not been effective. Since his retirement these calls have continued because Dr. Hirschman was known to have been a key diagnostician at Mount Sinai for many years. Of course, there are many requests for help with complex infectious diseases problems. When a patient, or a physician, calls Dr. Hirschman reviews the history and medical data that are sent and offers suggestions to the patient’s physician as to how to proceed to establish a diagnosis. The patients also are helped to understand their medical problems. If the patient so requests, or there is no longer a physician caring for the patient, Dr. Hirschman will refer the patient to physicians for proper medical care. Usually, the patients seeking help have either complex medical problems or the diagnosis just has been missed. Therefore, these consultative endeavors do not constitute a traditional medical practice since there is no hands-on medical care to the patient. Shalom Z. Hirschman, M.D. 2
