I am a toxicologist supporting the home cleaning category at SC Johnson in Global Safety And Regulatory Affairs (GSARA). I am a Biochemistry graduate, with an MSc in Toxicology and 10 years of experience in applied toxicology and risk assessment.
Employment
September, 2011 – Present
My current role involves toxicology and regulatory assessments for SC Johnson’s home cleaning formulations marketed in Europe. After joining SC Johnson, I developed an understanding of the Detergents Regulation and the Dangerous Preparations Directive. With the change in regulation to Classification of Labelling and Packaging (CLP), I led the project to implement this regulation for SC Johnson’s European formulations. I was involved in training junior members of the team as well as keeping senior members updated to ensure the whole team was up to speed with the requirements of the regulation for all product categories. I am also responsible for ensuring compliance under REACh by carrying out Downstream User Safety Assessments (DUCSA). I have prepared the toxicology part of the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) dossiers for active chemicals used in SC Johnson's home cleaning products and have presented my risk assessment approach to the authorities.
My area of expertise from a risk assessment perspective is skin sensitisation; however, I also have experience in other areas of toxicology. Since joining SC Johnson and working on home cleaning formulations, I have increased my knowledge in the area of skin and eye irritation including how to use alternative methods with respect to CLP.
One of my favourite areas of toxicology is exposure assessment and understanding the habits and practices of consumers. I also have experience in coordinating GLP toxicology studies.
January 2007 – August, 2011
I worked at Unilever in the Safety Environmental and Assurance Centre (SEAC). My main role was to conduct skin sensitisation risk assessments on ingredients intended to be used at a new level or in a new product format. I gained experience working on ingredients in a wide variety of Unilever’s home and personal care products.
My role involved interpreting data from Human Repeat Insult Patch Tests (HRIPTs), M&K guinea pig maximisation assay and the Local Lymph Node Assay (LLNA). I also carried out exposure assessments. With my main area of expertise in the skin allergy area, I was involved in implementing the new Unilever fragrance guidelines as well as working on how to approach the issue of aggregate exposure risk assessment of fragrances.
I was also responsible for leading projects and trained junior toxicologists in the skin sensitisation area.
I had the opportunity to present at the European Research Group on Experimental Contact Dermatitis (ERGECD) conference in September 2009. My presentation was on risk assessment approaches in the skin sensitisation area. To broaden my knowledge on the skin, I completed a module from the MSc toxicology course on Dermal Toxicity at the University of Surrey in 2009.
Work experience
During my two years studying for my A-levels, I volunteered at a hospital in Birmingham. The time I spent at the hospital was an invaluable experience as I was able to work alongside leaders in the medical profession.
For my MSc Toxicology dissertation, I had the opportunity to work in an industry environment. This allowed me to witness first-hand how toxicology is employed within industry. I worked at the Central Toxicology Laboratory (CTL) at Syngenta in Alderley Park. My dissertation was a method development project to compare different cell preparations in the Comet assay. It allowed me to gain experience in isolating mouse tissue and working to GLP.
