Supervised the school social worker and 3 other MSW staff with boy grade school through high school that resided in the boy’s home. Worked with child care workers, administrator and other staff to meet the needs of boys with many issues. Boys were ward of the court or in DFS custody. Some, but very few of the parents were working to gain custody of their children. Some boys attended the on grounds school the Academy. Others went to public elementary, junior and high schools. Some had scholarships to St. Mary’s high school next to the boy’s home. Evaluated social workers and have had experience terminating employees in a professional dignified and respectful manner. The boys were dealing with a myriad of problems. Low self-esteem, abandonment issues, sexual abuse, learning disabilities, runaway and incorrigible behavior. Worked closely with treatment plans and group therapy topics to benefit the boys in school and at home. Developed a monthly luncheon meeting for the families and legal guardians of the boys that were permitted to see their sons. Established positive relationship building with the parents and had speakers on current issues and parenting topics in a non-threatening atmosphere. Gathered topic ideas from the parents as well. Epworth had a program for teens that aged out of the system and successfully completed their education and goals. Camp Tambo for summer camp. Instructed at risk youth how to swim, hike, orienteer, do pottery, skits, vespers etc. Most had never camped or been out of the city limits. Social Worker/Springfield Public Defenders Office/ downtown Springfield, Mo. 63807. 12/84-9/85. Had a practicum 12/84-4/85. Was the first Social Worker hired at this office after I graduated Mo. State University. I began the lawyer’s caseload and went to the county jail every am to get the paperwork started for whoever had been booked the night before. If they needed or requested Public Defender, this is how the process began. I would obtain their eyeglasses, contact family members as needed, answer questions etc. This was to see the client sooner and go over their rights and treat them with dignity. Most were indigent, had drug problems, some needed psychological testing, were homeless or wrote bad checks. Some were charged with homicide etc. I trial assisted for Greene county and the surrounding area. Worked on alternative sentencing programs. To attend drug and alcohol treatment programs for part of the sentence.

- Probation and Parole/Springfield Mo. junior year of undergraduate school for one semester. Assisted with conducting home visits with people on parole. Helping them with any needed resources and checking in for any violations. I worked on a juvenile caseload completing pre-sentence investigations.

-Housing Solutions/Caseworker/ downtown St. Louis, Mo. Olive St. Summer of 86 with a stipend. Practicum for St. Louis University. I worked with young single mothers in a new property project. I conducted parenting and resource classes on home visits. The women lived in a property of individual apts linked together. They were looking for work or in school. There were goals and guidelines to remain living and receiving the housing. Many came from abusive backgrounds, domestic abuse, alcohol and substance abuse and or lived in high crime neighborhoods and were poverty stricken. A few had failure to thrive babies. Trying to break the previous cycle of abuse.
