Statement of Qualification

I graduated in June 2018 from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. I have extensive experience in MATLAB and Microsoft Office, and introductory experience in C++, Creo, OpenVSP, XFLR, LabView, and SolidWorks. I am a flexible learner who functions well in both leadership and teamwork roles. My undergraduate program focused heavily on laboratory testing, experimentation, and hands on experience. I am seeking employment in the Seattle area. Education and Project History

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Class of 2018 3.03 GPA Aerospace engineering degree, aeronautics concentration. Relevant courses include Aerospace Engineering Analysis, Propulsion Systems, Aircraft Design I/II/III, Aerothermodynamics I/II/III, Experimental Aerothermodynamics, Experimental Aerodynamics, Aerodynamics and Flight Performance, Supersonic and Hypersonic Aerodynamics, Mechanics of Materials I/II, Aerospace Structural Analysis I/II, Experimental Stress Analysis, Aircraft Dynamics and Control, Electric Circuit Theory and Lab, Statistical Methods for Engineers, Launch Vehicle and Missile Design, Spacecraft Environments, Aircraft Development History. Aeronautics Concentration Senior Design Project 2017-2018 Contributed to design of a firespotting unmanned aerial system for California for Aircraft Design I/II/III courses. Project assignment mandated a four week flight time at 55,000 feet to minimize time in the busiest parts of Class A airspace. Individually developed a model for flight area using CAL FIRE risk assessment for the state of California, as well as a cost model. Propulsion Laboratory Experiment - Boeing T50 Turboshaft Engine 2017 Led test operation of a Boeing T50 turboshaft engine modified to a turbojet configuration for Propulsion Systems course. Performed individual cycle analysis from inlet to nozzle through each stage of the engine. Ensured safe operation by managing turbine temperatures and rotational speeds. Data acquired through LabVIEW. Performed individual cycle analysis using MATLAB. Wind Tunnel Laboratory Experiment - NACA 4412 Analysis 2017 Determined lift and drag forces on two different aspect ratio wings at different angles of attack, both NACA 4412 airfoils for Experimental Aerothermodynamics course. Class scheduling caused my experiment time to be after my analysis time, giving an opportunity for near real time analysis from the load cell and to MATLAB. Also used a larger tunnel sized “infinite wing” with pressure taps in the wing and pressure probes behind the wing to observe surface behavior at different angles of attack.

Hydrostatic Test Procedures 2017

Contributed to drafting of hydrostatic test procedures conforming to ASME Section VIII, Division I, Part UG-99 for Cal Poly Space Systems Hybrid Motor 7-Heavy combustion chamber and oxidizer tank. Organized approval of the procedures through Cal Poly Environmental Health and Safety department.

Air Motor Project Team Lead 2014

Managed team of 8 classmates in the early manufacturing stages of a compressed air powered motor for Introduction to Design and Manufacturing course. Individually contributed by cutting all 24 crank disks for the motors from brass stock, and inspecting the final work of the team. Created Creo CAD model of air motor prior to manufacturing and assembly. Christopher M. Young

Two Liter Bottle Rocket Launcher 2018

Restored Cal Poly Space Systems “Two Liter Launchpad” club outreach equipment. Replaced solenoid valve that pressurized two liter bottles. Repaired and replaced broken plumbing. Repaired water supply and replaced corroded electrical equipment. Disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled Sharpe SPN pneumatic actuator. Refined actuation to allow more consistent launches of two liter bottles.

Small Dog Simulator 2018

Designed and assembled a robot for an open academic project using two electric motors, an Arduino Uno, an analog sound sensor, an active buzzer, an ultrasonic range sensor, and a TB6612FNG motor controller. Used Arduino IDE to code Uno in C++. Robot uses ultrasonic sensor to identify an object and is designed to follow at an uncomfortably close distance. When yelled at, the robot beeps an apology and quickly backs up. Employment History

Student Safety Technician Cal Poly College of Engineering, S.L.O., CA March ‘17 to Today Duties include promoting a culture of safety among all College of Engineering clubs, conducting safety walkthroughs, and establishing a common baseline of safe procedures. Student Safety Technician Cal Poly Biomedical Engineering Department March ‘18 to Today Duties include verifying operation of eyewash stations, verifying operation of emergency showers, chemical inventory, MSDS organization, and other safety related tasks as necessary. Digital Learning Assistant Museum Of Flight, Seattle, WA June ‘16 to September ‘16 Administrator for the 2016 Washington Aerospace Scholars residency, and Zero Robotics. Visitor Services Assistant Museum Of Flight, Seattle, WA June ‘15 to September ‘15 Duties included conducting NASA Space Shuttle Trainer tours, instructing visitors about Concorde, 787, SAM 970 (Kennedy’s Air Force One), operating flight simulators. Volunteer/Extracurricular History

Public Relations Officer Cal Poly Space Systems 2017-2018 Duties include informing people outside of the daily operations of the campus rocketry club about what the club is working on, managing outreach events, coordinating with the College of Engineering and Aerospace Engineering department, recording club tests and other significant events, and cooperating with other campus clubs.

Student Safety Officer Cal Poly Space Systems 2016-2017 Duties include ensuring safe operation of the campus rocketry club, from daily manufacturing through full launches. Oversaw test fires and test launches of Hybrid Motor 7 - Heavy and associated sounding rocket, Kronheim. Served as interface between club leadership and Cal Poly Environmental Health and Safety department. Previous experience assembling and refining plumbing infrastructure to remotely add liquid oxidizer to the hybrid rocket contributed to overall knowledge of the propulsion system.

Assistant Mentor and Virtual Mentor Washington Aerospace Scholars 2015-2018 Following participation in 2013 and an internship in 2014, volunteered to serve as a team leader and discuss university-level engineering coursework and projects in 2015.
