Point of contact between customer to ensure specifications are met. Provide designs and documentation. Coordinate with internal departments. Work closely with manufacturing to ensure optimal design for manufacturability. Assemble prototypes and write assembly instructions.

HAAS AUTOMATION, Oxnard, CA Feb 2001 - July 2016

The largest CNC machine tool builder in the Western World, Haas Automation manufactures a full line of CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers, CNC lathes, rotary tables and 5C indexers.

Mechanical Engineer 3

Developed MQL ( minimum quantity lubrication) option for the Haas vertical milling machines.

Successfully built a $250K gantry milling machine and documented needed design changes and improvements.

Consolidated electrical connection plates and reduced their cost by simplifying the design and using a lower cost finish, while ensuring a uniform appearance. $80K is being saved annually.

Redesigned amplifier busbars to eliminate waste by bending the material from straight strips instead of bending from complex geometry, resulting in $5k annual savings.

Saved $3K annually and increased efficiencies around buying, installing and inventory requirements by consolidating 12 rubber cable management clamps to 2.

Successfully used Solidworks FEA to redesign and stiffen a large cast column for the EC-1600 milling machine.

Redesigned sheet metal safety enclosures for the tool room, small and medium line of vertical milling machines.

Engineered a reliable and innovative automatic door system prototype for the International Manufacturing Technology Show held in Chicago. This product was developed to keep cost under $100; most “off the shelf” systems are $300+. This design used a small pneumatic cylinder and windshield wiper motor in a unique way.

Increased inventory tracking accuracy and assembly line morale by eliminating wasted time and effort disassembling and rebuilding sub assembly parts.

$5K annual savings achieved by simplifying the high-pressure service coolant kits. This was accomplished by thorough research and understanding the scope of the project. Discovered only a small sub assembly would meet the needs of the customers. 20 kits were reduced to 1 and the customer does not need to replace undamaged parts.

Designed a low cost milling machine for a new product line. One aspect of reducing the cost was designing the base as a “cope and drag” casting with no cores and machining. It is a 1 set up operation on a 3 axis machine.

Took the initiative to quickly train and accustom newly hired engineers with the company’s software and protocols.
