State of Minnesota:

My name is Justin Clevenger and I am writing to inquire about the Historical Architect position in Saint Paul. I completed my Master’s of Science in Historic Preservation at Columbia University in New York City and received my Bachelor’s of Science in Architecture at the University of Maryland in College Park, I am very interested in how architecture and historic preservation can be used as tools to change the urban landscape and improve people’s living conditions. In order to learn more about this, I studied commercial and residential design at the University of Maryland in College Park and I was able to develop my own understanding about contemporary architectural design and development. I went to Columbia University to learn about the traditional architectural design strategies, to build upon them, and apply those lessons to modern projects. I learned about the preservation process both on-site and in the board room. My course work covered the physical materials, systems, and processes as well as creating building conditions assessments and researching the history, theory and legal policies surrounding preservation and conservation.

Before I earned my Master’s degree from Columbia, I already possessed a solid understanding about construction, preservation, and architecture. I restored and renovated houses destroyed by hurricanes at Barker Contracting. While there I gained real-world hands-on experience with building systems and materials. I also worked for Opus East, LLC as the assistant to the Superintendent. I assisted in the administrative operations, maintained and regulated appointments between contractors and arranged meetings. I also served as a CAD consultant for the design team and office staff. While I worked for the Historic Preservation Training Center, I was able to move from the public realm to the government. While working for them on projects at Gettysburg National Military Park, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area I was afforded the opportunity to learn how architectural design and administration is done at the federal level. I recently collaborated with Mark Rakatansky and Jorge Otero-Pailos on an adaptive re-use project in Oslo, Norway for the U.S. Embassy built in 1959 and designed by Eero Saarinen. I transformed the pre-Cold War era U.S. government embassy into an architectural institute designed to house and exemplify the people and architecture of Norway. The final design focused upon the wooden screen located in the central four-story atrium. The concept of the original design of the building was to convey a sense of openness which I reinforced with the creation of a four-story addition on the building’s east facade and by extending the wooden screen to the extension’s envelope and remodulating it according to the interior program. I very much appreciate your time and consideration and I look forward to speaking with you.

sincerely,

Justin Clevenger
