Achievements:
In addition to the management of Environmental Laboratory and the tribology laboratory I was responsible for the exploration laboratory undertaking fire assay and aqua regia analysis for gold and precious metals. My extensive experience in the FAAS and ICP-OES enabled me to train junior technicians in analysis and method development. In my tenure at SGS in Tanzania I was periodically responsible for fire assay and aqua regia from milling stages to fluxing, cupellation and weighing to aqua regia analysis. I was instrumental in obtaining ISO 17025 accreditation for the Aqua Regia method using both the FAAS and the ICP-OES and the introduction of LEAN methodology to the process.

Project description:
Assessment of dredged spoil for disposal at sea. As signatories to the London Dumping Convention, port authorities require a permit from the Department of Environmental Affairs and tourism before they could dump their dredged material at sea. This dredged spoil needs to meet certain standards in order for the permit to be issued. The CSIR assesses the dredged spoil on an annual basis and submits a report on the quality if the sediment in the port.

Project description:
The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry monitors all its sewage and water treatment facilities in the province.
