A huge fire burnt down the largest warehouse in South Africa in March 2017 causing major concerns throughout the municipality. Study was conducted to understand the impacts of the fire during the fire and afterwards. Studies included water quality, air quality, dispersion modelling, complaints monitoring.

Achievements:

In addition to the management of Environmental Laboratory and the tribology laboratory I was responsible for the exploration laboratory undertaking fire assay and aqua regia analysis for gold and precious metals. My extensive experience in the FAAS and ICP-OES enabled me to train junior technicians in analysis and method development. In my tenure at SGS in Tanzania I was periodically responsible for fire assay and aqua regia from milling stages to fluxing, cupellation and weighing to aqua regia analysis. I was instrumental in obtaining ISO 17025 accreditation for the Aqua Regia method using both the FAAS and the ICP-OES and the introduction of LEAN methodology to the process.

Project description:

Assessment of dredged spoil for disposal at sea. As signatories to the London Dumping Convention, port authorities require a permit from the Department of Environmental Affairs and tourism before they could dump their dredged material at sea. This dredged spoil needs to meet certain standards in order for the permit to be issued. The CSIR assesses the dredged spoil on an annual basis and submits a report on the quality if the sediment in the port.

DWAF Water Quality Monitoring Programme (KZN region)

Project description:

The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry monitors all its sewage and water treatment facilities in the province. The CSIR laboratories analyse these samples on their behalf and report back to them on the state of these facilities. In the event of a factory or other facility discharging there effluent illegally then the CSIR laboratories analyse these samples and appear in court as expert witnesses on behalf of DWAF.

Kudu Pipeline Background Study

Natural gas was found of the coast of Namibia and a pipeline was designed to pipe the gas from the drilling rig onto shore. Before any building was done the CSIR laboratory analysed the water and sediment as part of a background study to obtain a reference for the future.
