A BRIEF PROJECT REPORT

[Technology Systems Development (TSD) programme of DST] Title: Design and Synthesis of Low Band Gap Conjugated Polymers and The Fabrication of Inverted Polymer Solar Cells.

Designed nineteen polymers for photovoltaic applications using validated PBC/B3LYP/6-31G and PBC/HSE06/6-31G methods. The quantum chemically calculated values of the Highest Occupied Crystal Orbital(HOCO) and Lowest Unoccupied crystal Orbital (LUCO) and energy gap are summarized . Out of which four Polymers suitable for the particular application are screened and selected – P3HT–PCBM, EDOT-PHENO, PHENO-BTZ, PHENO-BSE and MEH-PPV. EDOT-PHENO was synthesized through cost effective direct arylation reaction using palladium acetate as catalyst. PHENO- BTZ and PHENO-BSE were synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation reaction. MEH-PPV was synthesized by Gilch polymerization route using potassium t-butoxide as base in dry THF at room temperature. All the polymers were characterized using H 1

NMR, GPC,

Cyclic voltammetry, Differential pulse voltammetry, TGA, UV-Visible etc. The J-V characteristics were studied. The four instruments –AFM, Spin coating unit, solar simulator and Hall measurement system are mainly used instruments in this project. List of Publications arising from the Project
