RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

Artificial Tracheal Stent Research in large vivo animals (May-December 2017)

• Sheep models were implanted with artificial tracheal tubes. The goal of the project was to create an artificial tracheal tube from polymer composite for children with velopharyngeal difficulties.

• Collected MRI and CT images bi-weekly. Analysis of images in ScanIP involved reducing noise, amplifying image quality, and meshing.

• Meshed model imported to COMSOL where it was subjected to loading in uniaxial, biaxial, and transverse directions. In addition, flow and stress dynamics were also tested for delamination and fatigue over time.

• From the COMSOL data, new material selection for the polymer composite was selected and a new tracheal stent was created.
