Liaison between Mexico, US based teams and Overseas Development Sources analyzing product design, materials, and processes, providing various cost estimates and scenarios in order to meet cost and product specifications.

Analysis of development and manufacturing processes for areas of improvement to improve development cycle. Identifying lower cost manufacturing sources, vendors, manufacturing and assembly processes.

3D Computer Aided Solid Modeling and Systems

Professional Experience

Dec 2016 – Current West Coast Corp, Ontario CA Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Dual Role, reporting to President, managing NPD process and development activities in addition to

program management of new platforms to enter new market and product categories. Developed new

product line of Dropped Object Prevention solution products in addition to new product introductions

of existing core brands.

Implemented NPD Stage Gate Process for new product development identifying Key Gates, High-level

and Low-level milestones, and approval points for New Product Development.

Implemented in-house 3D printing to assist in early design stages, design reviews, and evaluations and

proof of concepts, reducing yearly outsourcing expense for prototyping activities.

Identified and added additional Asia Tooling and Development resources increasing the pool of those

services to leverage product development activities in Asia.

Introduced collaboration tool such as “Basecamp”, Planning, Tracking and Action Plan worksheets.

Accomplishments: Introduce NPD Stage Gate Process. Designed and released first Dropped Object Prevention Tool Tether and Tool Attachments for entry into new product category. Gained the company membership on the ISEA/ANSI 121 panel for establishing Design Standards and Testing Criteria for Dropped Object Prevention solutions, providing credibility to the company as an active member of the ISEA 121 Panel. 10 new product introductions in 1 year, within 1 week of committed schedule.

Jan 2015 – Dec 2016 Pelican Products, Torrance CA Manager, NPD Mobile Devices

Responsible for project management and development of new protective cases for mobile phones, iPad

Tablets, Notebooks and Laptops.

Coordinated development activities between all cross functional groups, Tooling, Manufacturing and

Operations, including submission of approval samples to ATT, Licensors and regulatory agencies.

Conduct weekly team meetings and conference calls with Marketing, Operations and Sourcing updating

project status and managing detailed schedules to ensure product availability supports new device

launch. Provide on-site debug and manufacturing support in Asia on a regular basis.

Established Design Guidelines and Design Standards for Case designs. Created Share Point as a central

location for maintaining all Project information and documentation.

Provide case design approach, Engineering Layout, Development schedule,

DFM, Product cost, and Capital expenditures required.

Accomplishments: Revenue increased from 2MM in 2014 to 17MM in 2015 with the release of 8 new phone cases for new device launches including Samsung Edge, S6, and S6 Active, iPhone SE and Apple Air3 iPad. Designed and developed first IP68 water proof phone case. Put in place Asia Operations team to leverage product development and project management activities in Asia.

August 2011 – Dec 2014 Jacuzzi Project Manager Chino, CA

Responsible for project management and development of new Spa and Spa accessory introductions. Responsibilities included: Establishing Product Specifications, Performance requirements, Design direction, Engineering Design Layout, Development schedule, Product cost and Capital expenditures required. Coordinated development activities between all cross functional groups, mold shop, tooling shop supplier, manufacturing and technical support groups, including documentation, submission to Regulatory agencies for certification and compliance audits. Defined test strategy, methods and procedures, review of first articles and validation samples. Held weekly meetings with Marketing, and Operations and Sourcing updating project status, cost and cost reduction proposals to meet cost targets. Provide on-site debug and manufacturing support in Mexico on a regular basis.

Accomplishments: Designed and Developed Quick Release Door for easy consumer access, eliminating the need for 27 screws, patent pending, Patent Pending. Designed and Developed “Integrated Cover Lift System”, patent pending. Redesigned Pillow fastening system reducing cost from $4.78 to $ 0.46 resulting in annual savings of 40,000. Reduced Material Usage on ABS Pan for annualized savings of 75,000/yr.

As Project Manager, re-launched of the core line, J-300, successfully introducing 8 new models in 9 months and identified over $520,000 in annualized product cost savings.

2006 - 2010

Mattel Inc. Principal Engineer, Product Development El Segundo, CA

Responsible for development of Matchbox accessories and playsets: Coordinated transfer of design packages to Asia development sources, managing development activities from rough concept up thru production. Conducted design review of mechanisms and assemblies for materials, design approach, plastic part design and tooling configuration. Provided on-site debug support with Asia Pacific manufacturers up thru production including manufacturing and molding processes. Responsibilities included development of first models for internal approvals, project planning and tracking as well as providing cost analysis, cost reduction proposals and daily interface with Marketing, Design, Packaging, and Product Integrity.

Accomplishments: Resourced manufacturing and tooling activities from Asia vendor base to Mattel Bangkok Mfg facility, reducing tool build lead time from 8 weeks to 6 weeks, eliminated tool shipment costs and reduced product cost from .067 to .053 per unit over 6MM units for total savings of $780,000.

2003-2006 Mattel Inc. Director, Product Development, Radio Control El Segundo, CA

Responsibilities included management and supervision of Engineering Staff. Established operating budgets for development, managed overhead and capital tooling expenditures. Conducted design reviews for design approach, reviewed mechanisms and assemblies for materials, plastic part design and tooling configuration. Implemented hybrid design and development strategies to expedite the development and introduction collaborating with Asia manufacturing sources to support business unit goals and financial objectives.

Accomplishments: Relocated the TYCO Radio Control group from Mount Laurel Facility in New Jersey, to Mattel El Segundo, establishing a co-located, team based environment. Increased volume of projects that were done turnkey, shortening development cycle and lowering design and development costs. Received “2005 Toy of the Year” award from the toy industry for development of the TYCO Radio Control Shell Shocker. Introduced Hobby grade R/C category.

1997 – 2002 Mattel Inc. Director, Product Development - Preschool, Large and Small

Responsibilities included group management and supervision of staff, implementation of product development strategies and activities through Asia based development resources to support brand goals and objectives, including development and prototyping of Design models, working models for management review and approval, budget management, resource allocation for domestic and Asia development resources. Daily interface with all departments: Marketing, Design, Product Planning, Cost Engineering, Tooling, Manufacturing. Weekly conference calls with Asia based team.

Accomplishments: Led in relocating the ‘Doll and Girls Activities’ design and development groups from Mount Laurel, New Jersey to Mattel, El Segundo headquarters establishing a co-located, team based environment. Increased volume of projects done turnkey, shortening development cycle and reducing design and development costs.
