ENGINEERING PHILOSOPHY

If one looks in the dictionary for “engineering” one will find something like: The application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of machines, etc.

But that is only one of the most prevalent ways of engineering. How you engineer is definitely important, but it is more important that you do engineer. So what is engineering?

It is the origination and implementation of workable ideas to manipulate the material universe (including matter, energy, space and time) for Beings*. An engineer understands the material universe (by knowing the physical sciences and by experience) and so can predict and control its behavior. He also must understand beings so that he can cause the material universe to better serve them. For instance, the end product should be safe. It should be a pleasure to use. It should protect or save more life than it destroys, etc. Engineer comes from the Latin in-, in + gignere, to beget or to originate.

An engineer should know his tools (math, science, observation, testing) and drill with them until he knows them cold. In this fashion he can think with these tools instead of thinking about them (though a critical review of the tools is also legitimate) and so can focus on the material universe and how to control it.

It should be the goal of any engineer to produce products that function well and flow smoothly through all stages, from concept to customer to disposal, and are enjoyed and produce a raised level of society.

*Beings: Short for “living beings,” people, pets, wildlife, anything alive.
