Human Resources Manager (Lead role) – Downhole & Mission Divisions-Canada

Reporting to Group HR Director in Houston and dotted line to sectors’ Area Directors & GM.

Supporting two business divisions of NOV in Canada; 600 employees across Canada.

Responsible for managing the team of 12 employees (direct and dotted line) in effectively driving all HR functions for 10 Downhole facilities across Canada.

Manage and oversee key HR functions for NOV-Downhole Manufacturing, Rentals, Engineering, Sales, Field Operations businessses across Canada.

Provide effective leadership and range of strategic HR consulting services to Downhole & Mission divisons. This includes staff planning, salary review, bonus plan and disability management.

Budgetary responsibility for the divisional HR department, projects and programs.

Lead Advisor for immigration and cross-border issues; Manage expatriates and international travellers from and to Canada; Familiar with the process of LMIA and work permit.

Plan & coordinate programs and services to maximize the strategic use of human resources and align HR services to meet business objectives.

Accomplishments at NOV:

Nominated as “Charter Champion” to lead one of the Downhole Charters globally named “P3 - People Passion and Power”. This was a global strategic initiative with the specific goals and objectives aligned to the divisional business plan. Rolled out complete “on boarding” program globally. Introduced employee recognition awards worldwide; safety, performance & service.

Talent Acquisition Campaign: Planned and organized several NOV and private Career Fairs within province and outside the province. Ontario Career Fair in September 2008 (led this project from start to finish) was a historical success where we advertise across Ontario through various means including radio, newspaper, facebook and linkedin that NOV management team will be visiting 3 places in Ontario to select and offer the jobs to right candidates on the spot. We visited Toronto, London and Windsor. This resulted in selecting and offering jobs to 30 candidates.

Coach and train managers on successful Hiring and Retention Strategies. This was a corporate strategic initiative to develop a program to train managers on effective hiring strategies and equip them with tools to hire and retain their “star” employees. This program helped to increase retention by at least 40% and cut staffing cost by 18%.

Organized and facilitated Talent Management Program with different departments of Downhole Manufacturing, Sales & Operations. This turned out to be the great tool for line managers to plan and execute Career Progression and Succession Planning for their respective teams. In Canada, Downhole group was the first one to introduce this program in early 2008.

Effectively dealt with various Employee Relations’ matters including thorough investigations on the critical Employee Standards and Human Rights cases such as Sexual, Harassment, Favouritism, Drug & Alcohol, wrongful dismissal, Health & Safety etc.

Successfully launched and implemented NOV and HR Policies and Guidelines to Downhole business group. This includes Drug & Alcohol Policy, Vehicle Policy, Travel and Expense Policy, Gifts & Award Guidelines, Relocation, Vacation, Sick, Pay Practice and Privacy Policy etc. This was the biggest achievement to roll out these policies and guidelines from the scratch in the organization.

Developed and implemented various programs including Diversity recognition, Service Awards, Best Performer Awards and Mentorship Program related to Organizational Culture Change.

Rolled out a proactive Health and Safety programs namely Guiding Principles, Safety Awards, Awareness sessions, New Hire Orientation and culture change across the organization, resulting in a 20% reduction in reportable injuries and 36% savings in Workers’ Compensation Payments.

Led the process of effectively developed the Staffing Plans for the Division. Partnered with multiple facets of the business to engage them in this exercise. This process resulted in reducing 25% of the staffing cost and 75% cut down on temporary agency workers.

Restructured job profiles through Competency based Job Evaluations to retain and attract technical talent in the organization. 15 workshops on Competency-Job Evaluation were conducted across region to obtain the grass-roots level information from employee group. This resulted in developing competency based Job Profiles and Descriptions

Managed the complete process of HR, Payroll and Benefits Integration in four NOV business acquisitions which impacted 6 different facilities in Canada: NQL (300 employees), Marlex (80 employees), Progressive (50 employees), New Era (50employees) & ReedHycalog (100 employees).

Successfully developed and delivered comprehensive interactive New Hire Orientation and Company Overview Programs for new hires and existing employees on an on-going basis. This program was a great success and very well received by new hires and their line managers.

Introduced and implemented HCM Manager and Employee Self Service modules. Downhole division has taken a lead to introduce this first time in NOV Canada in mid-2008.

Planned and execute the strategic initiative of Reduction in Workforce (RIFs) program due to the economic downturn and market situation in 2009. Accomplished the targeted reduction of 30% which included over 100 employees across Canada. This was done in 10 rounds during the course of 8 months. This was not possible without partnering with business, effective communication and building relationship with the line managers.

Played a lead role in `Shut Down’ (part of Consolidation process) of 4 Manufacturing facilities; deployment of employees to outplacement and lay-offs. Initially over 200 employees were affected by this decision however; I was successful in saving 40% of employees’ job through deployment, relocation and transfers to other divisions of NOV.
