Brought on board to lead the Project Controls function for the Concentrate Expansion Program (CEP), a $2B initiative to increase capacity from 18M tonnes of iron ore concentrate per year to 22M. Stepped up to develop a comprehensive controlling process framework for the five-phase project, encompassing criteria for project management, scope management, schedule management, cost management, quality management, human resources, communication, risk management, and procurement & contracts. This criterion extends to construction at the mine as well as rail operations.

KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

• Leads a team of nine direct reports across each of the key areas of project controls, allocating work, coaching and mentoring, and effectively managing the team and resources to ensure project success.

• Provided insight bid evaluation, reviewing vendor proposals and evaluating risk before making recommendations for contract award.

• Took the initiative to develop a framework for project planning and evaluation, bringing clarity to expectations and consistency to project control processes. Presented the idea to the CEO and CFO and gained executive buy-in to implement the framework into the company’s operations.

• Leveraged project management insights to implement Primavera software, aligning it with Prism, Oracle and SAP to better manage projects and gain improved visibility into progress.

• Takes part in operational construction planning and management, demonstrating a breadth of knowledge in all phases of the project life cycle using PMI project processes.

• Oversees the teams to ensure that they deliver timely and accurate reports and requirements for costs, forecasts, budgets, financial/business cases, project analysis, schedule status, and variance explanations associated with the various corporate reporting/control requirements.

• Works in tandem with the Planner/Scheduler to establish cost and schedule integration, as well as to identify potential crisis, put in place contingency plans, and strategies for keeping projects in scope.

• Collaborates with the Project Advisory Committee (PAC) to prepare budgets and provide members with comprehensive, regular reports on revenues and expenditure.

• Interacts with a range of stakeholders, including senior management, project managers, consultants, and suppliers, taking care to maintain open lines of communication and to delivery regular updates on mission, programs, products, and services.

• Charts critical paths to ensure that appropriate standards, policies and business processes exist for effective Project Controls functioning.

Engaged to harness project management strengths to develop and implement the controls needed to prevent creep, keep projects on schedule, and ensure no claims with contractors. In complement to project control responsibilities, also took initiative to develop strong working relationships with the GTAA, Air Canada staff, and 3rd party consultants, and contractors involved in project execution. Ultimately delivered an overall reduction in product time, incidents, and costs.

• Took the lead on risk identification and mitigation efforts, diligently evaluating each project to identify and rank risks, and to develop the appropriate controls for each risk.

• Steered risk review sessions with large project teams and client-side personnel, effectively bridging gaps between stakeholders and driving risk management solutions.

• Provided sound cost management support, including cost budgeting, cost forecasting, and variance analysis, as well as maintaining a pulse on materials management and procurement efforts to ensure fiscal accountability.
