» Summary

Ph. D candidate at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, major of electrical engineering, five years of academia experience in laser processing, spectroscopy, and material characterization. Broad knowledge/skills and long-lasting interest in laser shock peening, laser heat treatment, and femtosecond laser micromachining. Good analytical capability and interpersonal skills.

» Experience

Graduate Research Assistant

Laser Assisted Nano Engineering lab (LANE), University of Nebraska, Lincoln August, 2013 – present

• Developed a fs laser micromachining system with both infrared and ultraviolet processing ability. Integrated with a 5-axis laser scanner to drill holes with negative taper and/or high depth-diameter ratio. Tested cutting/drilling/polishing of transparent glass, ceramics, sapphire, alloys, plastics, etc.

• Developed a series of laser heat treatment techniques to reverse the sensitization of 5xxx Al alloy components in marine environments, including bulk, surface, and transient desensitization methods. Overwhelmed more than ten other teams and selected by the Office of Navy Research as the most promising technique. Developed the first portable laser desensitization equipment, which will be tested on board in the near future.

• Developed a portable Nd:YAG laser shock peening equipment based on a series of experiments on Al alloy, stainless steel, carbon steel, and ceramics, in which the improvement of material properties such as hardness, toughness, residual stress, friction, corrosion resistance, and irradiation tolerance was observed and explained by microstructure changes. The equipment can be used for variable applications such as ships and pipelines.

• Researched flame-assisted laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with the investigation of peak intensity/distribution, FWHM, electron temperature/density to improve the LIBS sensitivity and spectral resolution. Graduate Research Assistant

Key lab of material modification by laser, ion & electron beams, Dalian University of Technology August, 2010 – June, 2013

• Researched deuterium retention on lithiated tungsten exposed to high-flux deuterium plasma using LIBS.
