Community Health Systems - Franklin, TN 2014 – April 2018
One of the nation’s leading operators of general acute care hospitals. The organization’s affiliates own, operate or lease 137 hospitals in 21 states with approximately 22,000 licensed beds.
Senior Director IS Revenue and Financial Systems (2017 – April 2018). Lead team of 40+ IS professionals delivering product support, management and development of revenue cycle, patient financial services, general financial and personnel management systems for CHS. This includes all billing systems, coding and abstracting, ERP, GL, AP, Supply Chain and Materials Management, time keeping, and payroll systems. Provide oversight of outsourced services supporting Cloud based Remote Infrastructure Hosting, Service Desk, and Application Management of Cerner EMR systems. Optimization of support and maintenance functions to deliver optimum customer experience and achieve operational excellence of business processes.
Senior Director IS Tier 2 Clinicals (2015 – 2017). Product Management of Cerner EMR systems. Lead team of 40+ IS professionals delivering product support, management and development of Cerner EMR systems. Define strategic and tactical goals to further clinical and administrative capabilities of systems. Oversight of optimization of Clinical systems, leadership of efforts to insure all deployments follow this standard. Implemented Cerner contracted services supporting Cloud based Remote Hosting, Service Desk, and Application Management Established Best Practices Model and created an Executive and Project governance function that insured achievement of a clinically excellent system.
Senior Director IS Physician Support (2014 - 2015). Senior leader of IS for Ambulatory EMR functions. Implementation, optimization and all support of EMR systems (Athena and Allscripts). Oversight of network and server administration for delivery of systems to provide optimum performance and high reliability for 6,000 physicians in 150 practices and 1900 clinics, including vendor management, system support and maintenance, help desk capabilities specific to Ambulatory EMR, and full lifecycle performance of systems. Oversight of optimization of Clinical systems, leadership of all deployments of this standard. Supervise staff of 50 and all contractors to provide superior centralized IS services.
Successes / Achievements
Defined and implemented highly effective governance process and structure to provide oversight and leadership to the Acute Care and Ambulatory EMR Systems.
Created strategic key Business Partner relationships with Divisional, Market, Service Line and Executive leadership that focused on metrics of performance and the impact on business operations.
Developed dynamic processes, defined metrics, and created Service Level Agreements for key deliverables based on ITIL Standards to clearly communicate information systems performance and value.
Provided oversight of implementation of cloud-based Remote Hosting of Cerner applications as well as subsequent management. Defined and executed a structured program for improvement of responsiveness and availability of CHS Cerner Hospital/Clinic systems to optimize performance and create high reliability, resulting in 100% availability for the past 3 quarters.
Led highly successful project for implementation of Cerner Millenium Service Desk for Level 1 support of Cerner applications. This included process definition, establishment of service targets and relevant metrics, and go-live activities. This ultimately achieved an 84% first call resolution rate that far exceeded expectations and significantly improved clinician satisfaction.
Led projects for implementation of new solutions, including Anesthesia module, Blood Bank and Anatomic Pathology, Meaningful Use requirements, Blood Bank, Acute Care, and many others. Also led projects for annual upgrades to Cerner implementation, SoftLab, and Quality Control Measures. These projects met or exceeded defined expectations and were on or below budget.
Using metrics, conducted process improvement studies to determine performance improvement strategies resulting in a 24% increase of time available for projects quarter over quarter; improvement in turn-around time of incident resolution from an average of 8 days to 1.5 days; and increased output of enhancement/change requests from 400 to 1000 per month, all in less than a year.
Collaborating with key customers, defined and established a new process for requesting and delivering additions or changes to clinical systems. Customer satisfaction increased from below 60% to an average of 94% within one year. Established KPI’s to measure performance and continuously improve service delivery over time.
Via Christi Health (now Ascension Healthcare) - Wichita, KS 2007 – 2014
The largest non-profit health system in the U.S. and the world’s largest Catholic health system. Ascension includes approximately 150,000 associates and 36,000 aligned providers, operates 2,500 sites of care – including 141 hospitals and more than 30 senior living facilities in 22 states and the District of Columbia.
Senior Director (2012 – 2014). Overall IT management for implementation and support of EMR Clinical and Revenue Cycle systems, HR, Finance, Legal, Marketing and ERP systems. Directed PMO and informatics support for multiple hospitals and ambulatory clinics. Coordinated all IT Governance and portfolio management. Key involvement in the definition of a long-term strategy and the subsequent process to select a new, integrated EMR system. Led IT Governance and IT project resources throughout implementation of Cerner Millennium EMR for all hospitals, ambulatory clinics, and revenue cycle functions.
CIO (2010 – 2012). Interim CIO providing leadership to all IT/IS. Provided leadership and established effective Governance and alignment of IT strategies and operations. Created strategic partnerships to define an application strategy to achieve Meaningful Use Stage 1 for all facilities and Eligible Providers. This included leading a team of developers in Agile methodology to create a Physician specific tool, Mirror Image, which was then certified as a MU capable system.
