Plant Manager

Direct operations of 80+ person/50,000 sqft. plant including production, engineering, materials management, finance, quality, maintenance, logistics, purchasing, production control, and EH&S departments. Full responsibility for operating costs, profit and profit margins. Responsibilities also include the implementation of cost and schedule performance controls, lean and continuous improvement principles as well as management of the entire facility including multi-million dollar upgrades to plant and equipment.

Principal Engineer/Manufacturing Engineering Manager

Chief Mechanical Engineer/Deputy Program Manager

Direct the work of 72 engineers and designers and 10 field engineers as the head of the Mechanical Engineering Department with P&L responsibility for all mechanical aspects of the $5.1 billion JHSV and LCS contracts. Responsibilities included the design, engineering, selection and testing of all machinery and piping systems for both the JHSV and LCS Programs (20 ships) including gas turbines and diesels engines, reduction gear, cooling and refrigeration components, waterjets, bow thrusters, HPUs, composite shafting, valves, piping and pumps. Developed all applicable quality control and inspection procedures and assisted in CQE certification. Led the Detailed Design Reviews, Production Readiness Reviews and Business Process Reviews across all disciplines and departments.

Directed all aspects of design and engineering division - 55 QED personnel, 25 subcontractor personnel - with full P&L responsibility. Responsibilities included all drawing development in the mechanical, hull structure, habitability, outfitting and electrical (power, IC, electronics) disciplines as well as calculations for shock and vibration. I directed the program management of all Army (LSV, LCU) and Navy (CVN, LHD, LHA) Programs. Increased revenue 80% and doubled operating margins. Directed all Engineering and Manufacturing at Fabrication & Boiler Services

which encompassed the operations of a 40,000 sq. ft. fabrication and manufacturing facility and the supervision of 54 employees and 10 subcontractors with full P&L responsibility. Our team increased revenue 140% and reduced costs 40%. I directed an OSHA compliant Safety Program and directed the ISO Quality Program. Work efforts included the inspection, repair and reactivation of boilers, chillers and heat exchangers, the fabrication and overhaul of valves and pumps, the fabrication and modernization of railroad cars and steam locomotives and the manufacture and assembly of truck undercarriages and steering linkages.

1998 – 2001 CDI CORPORATION – Marine Group Portsmouth, VA

Program & Quality Manager/Technical Director

Directed 240 individuals and 11 subcontractors in all aspects of $44 million operating division with total P & L responsibility. Increased Revenue 24% and Profit Margins 38%. Responsibilities included directing all Steel Fabrication, Assembly, Testing and Engineering efforts for new naval system. Responsibilities also included the implementation of financial control systems and electronic management of the entire contract in an Integrated Product Data Environment (IPDE). I conducted lobbying and business development efforts on Capital Hill; making presentations to U.S. Senators. Proposed and was awarded a new, unsolicited, $14M Engineering Services and Technical Support Contract.

1994 - 1997 NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING Newport News, VA

Aircraft Carrier Nuclear Refueling & Overhaul Division

Construction/Program Manager

Directed operations of the $1.48 billion Aircraft Carrier Overhaul and Refueling division with total P&L responsibility. Responsibilities included direct management of 5 Superintendents, 15 Construction Supervisors, 24 General Foreman and over 1200 trade personnel in the Machinery Installation, Electrical, Steel Fabrication, Manufacturing and Production Control departments as well as directing all subcontractors. Directed the installation of seven new automated steel production lines including stamping, pressing, link pressing and forming in a major facility upgrade of the steel fabrication complex. Increased profit margins 25% and revenue 45%.

1988 – 1997 Engineering Manager – Reactor Plant Planning Yard

Directed 82 engineers and designers in the Aircraft Carrier Reactor Plant Planning Yard (RPPY) Engineering Project. My responsibilities included the mechanical, piping, electrical and structural engineering for all systems and components as well as R&D for the A4W Naval Nuclear Propulsion Reactor Plant systems on the USS Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers. Reported directly to NAVSEA 08 and Bettis Laboratories. We also provided emergency support to all Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers in yard and in service throughout the world.

Engineering Supervisor – Nuclear R&D/Manufacturing Engineer

Supervised 12 engineers in the design, engineering, prototype development and full scale testing and final manufacturing of new 36" Reactor Plant Isolation and Diverting Valves. This effort included the implementation of personal computer based CAE and CAD systems as well as CFD. Supervised the machining and manufacturing of $39 million new valve production run. Provided troubleshooting of problems associated with the main propulsion turbines, steam generators, CRDMs, turbine generators, main steam and main feed systems and catapults during the complex overhauls of the USS Nimitz and USS Eisenhower.
