TCP Packet Inspection and Analysis (Wireshark)

• Created a TCP dump file using Wireshark for the TCP connection used for “wget” and inspected the TCP packets in the resulting dump file.

• Identified the TCP connection setup and teardown phases, when the connection established state started & ended and the data transferred in the established state.

• The analysis of TCP connection setup and teardown phases included identifying the timestamps, sequence number, acknowledgement number, flags set and data packet sizes.

• Identified how data packets are transferred, number of data packets transferred, average data packet size and maximum & minimum packet sizes.

Term paper on IP Traceback techniques to defend against DDoS attacks with IP spoofing

• Wrote a paper to present and evaluate some of the defense mechanisms based on IP traceback which allow the victim to trace the source of the DDoS attacks even when IP spoofing is used.

• Two IP traceback techniques discussed were, Packet Marking and ICMP-based Traceback.
