Mr. Badgley was rotated throughout the plant learning how to perform duties in each department. He learned quickly, from the beginning of his career, there were frequent opportunities in everyone’s job that can be optimized easily with some initiative, commitment, and management support. His duties included:
Industrial engineering: Identifying waste, optimizing cycle time, executing process improvements, and improving quality.
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering: Reading prints, updating drawings SC/CC and revision dates, assisting Design and Release engineer with changes. Assisting quality in making fixtures that check each Significant and Critical characteristic (SC/CC).
Quality Engineer: Gathering and checking 2 parts from every line every hour, checking parts with measurement tools against a print, checking parts against a fixture, working with the lab to perform CMM on non-fixture parts. Performing root cause analysis on returned parts from the field.
Shipping and Handling: Operating a fork lift, inventory, material planning and logistics, packing, loading, and unloading.
Maintenance: Cleaning equipment, stocking replacement parts, troubleshooting down equipment, performing preventative maintenance on machines.
Press: Operating an overhead crane, loading and unloading dies, loading parts, performing quality checks, and general labor.
Tool and Die: Reading prints, creating parts of the die by machining, CNC, EDM, and sand blasting, working with engineering to load prints into the CNC machines. Operating a forklift and overhead crane. Using general tools.
Assembly: Perform the duties of an assembler creating the roller assembly for a caravan sliding door and the seat belt assembly. Knowledge was instrumental in improving the line from a 2 shift operation into a 1 shift operation. (Kaizen)
