PROJECT WORKS

Northern Illinois University

Reducing Unevenness and Nep Generation in the Production of Yarn

• Analyzed the problems affecting the production of yarn in a spinning industry and identified the defects from the data taken from VEERA industries by using six sigma techniques.

• Performed root cause analysis on defects and by applying DMAIC cycle the defects are solved, various graphical, statistical tools were used to study the behavior of critical to quality characteristics of carding station and improvements beneficial for CTQ’s.

• Minitab was used to evaluate whether process is in control or not by generating x bar, R charts and capability analysis.

• Implemented 5why analysis for the problems and analyzed the performance by developing Dot plots, Histograms, Kurtosis, Time series plot and Probability plots.

• Created process map in define phase to analyze Key process indicators (KPIs) to calculate the performance of CTQs by considering percentage of units within 120 neps and percentage of unevenness below 3.95.

• Implemented Six sigma tools to effectively finish the project thus by identifying the percentage of defects as 27% in whole production unit and by reducing the cost of process of net worth $160,000. Northern Illinois University

Facility Location for DeKalb Police Station

• Determined the optimal location of new facility for DeKalb police station by analyzing the real-time crime locations registered in city.

• Single facility minisum model with rectangular distances is used to minimize the sum of weighted distances of 10 unique locations.

• Single facility minimax model with Tchebychev distances was used to minimize the maximum weighted distances.

• The optimal location was found for the police station by joining the two different points obtained from different methods using a line segment and found a location with specified co-ordinates on google map for optimal location of new facility.

Increasing Operating Room utilization at CGH Medical Center(Block scheduling)

• Solved the problem of low utilization of operating rooms at CGH medical center for the fiscal year 2017 by creating new block schedule for surgeons and patients.

• Operating rooms past 3:30pm occurred 277 times in FY17 with mean of 1.3hours and standard deviation of 1.23 hrs., cases past these limits go overtime and expensive

• Identified key players and created process maps to analyze the factors responsible for waiting time of patients and of current state were done using ARENA input analyzer model to develop fit distributions.

• Developed Mixed Integer Linear Programming model (MILP) for creating block schedule to meet weekly patient demand.

• Implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) to increase the utilization rate of 63.3% to 95.20% i.e. change of 31.9%.

• Performed quality control tools like process capability charts to examine the efficiency of the developed schedule.
